I am sure I am late to this party, but at a really dull conference
recently I was playing around on my blackberry and I found a link that
let me download a version of mini-zork that is playable on my
blackberry:
http://www.thebogles.com/z2me/blackberryZ2me.jad
This was awesome and saved my life during the conference, as it looked
like I was checking my email studiously when in fact I was revisiting
FCD#3.
My question is, has anyway figured out an easy way to play the rest of
the infocom games or other text adventures on blackberry, and if so,
can someone post a link?
thnks. |

So far I've found only two ways to run Z-Machine games on phones with
Java. I don't know about Blackberry, but since I got Z2ME running on
mine, I assume it's Java. The only problem is that it only allows z3
files - thankfully, that includes most Infocom.
You might also want to check out ZeeME at http://setera.org/ZeeME/index.html.
It runs dreadfully slow and the interface is very awkward *in my
Motorola K1*. From screenies I've seen and feedback I've read, it
performs much better on better systems.
Z2ME is a godsend, indeed. Now I only wish there were more z3 games
out there, or that I could make a CYOA z3 game in I7! |

Oh, I misread your question. You can use most z3 files with Z2ME, as
well. You need the *.jar file.
Just open it with WinZIP and replace the file "textadv.z3" with any
other Infocom game, taking care to rename the Infocom game to
"textadv.z3" as well.
If you open the MANIFEST folder and file, you can also replace Mini-
Zork (or maybe it's Z2ME) where it first says it to the title of the
game, so you don't end up with lots of files called Z2ME.
You might even be able to replace the standard icon this way. I didn't
try that. |

As a matter of fact, I've compiled all the Infocom games that would
run on Z2ME, and have them all with me - Wishbringer.jar,
Enchanter.jar, Planetfall.jar, all that lot. Even Hitchhiker's worked,
which surprised me. I thought I'd be a good sport and send it
along. No .jad file, though, sorry.
Aw heck, I'll throw in Curses.z3, Endgame.z3 et all.

Enjoy. Hope I didn't forget any - but I probably did... |

Try http://sourceforge.net/projects/zaxmidlet or http://sites.google.com/site/zaxmidlet
Should play all infocom games (except beyond zork) and most inform
games.
Works best with devices that have a fixed screen size. Some newer
games that require a fixed screen size don't like the variable screen
size on devices like the storm.
Still a work in progress so please report any bugs on the sourceforge
site.
Thanks. |

My Motorola K1 wants to run the app, but it says:
**
ERROR
You are not authorized to access the restricted API
**
....which ordinarily would make me shrug and move on, thinking "Ok, I
just don't have a good enough phone." But the following message...
**
CANNOT ACCESS FILECONNECTION
You cannot run this MIDlet with the current permissions. Sign the
MIDlet suite, or run it in a different security domain.
**
....which gives me a flicker of hope. What is a MIDlet suite, can I
sign it, if so how? What would a different security domain be, and how
could I run something in it?
Failing all else, I suppose it would be out of the question to allow
the JAR file to contain a Z-code game, thus making each JAR file a
self-contained game (with the usual JAR ways of saving data), rather
like ZeeME and Z2ME do? |
