Post subject: Need help ID'ing a game from early 90's
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>games>strategic (more info?)

I remember playing a "risk-like" strategy game in the early to mid
90's - maybe around 1994. I believe the game was from SSI, because it
was in a smaller box than many games came in at the time.

The game was a top down view of a continent. You started out with
several territories, and I believe you got to pick your starting
territories. I seem to remember having to build some sort of factory,
and then being able to build mechs. These mechs were then sent out to
conquer neighboring territories. You could either focus on quickness or
armor.

When there were encounters, there would be an arcade like sequence
where both mechs were shooting at each other. Again, it was a top down
view of a city district, or whatever. If you won, you gained the district.

It wasn't particularly deep, and didn't take a whole lot of time to
win, but it was fun.

Anyone have any idea what this game was called? I'm trying to think
of tracking it down and trying it on dosbox. Thanks!

Cyber Empires in USA or Steel Empire in Europe.

One of best games ever for two or more players. My friends and I played this
to death on Amiga 500. 2 vs. 2...

BTW, developer Denis Dyack still send me Christmas cards. I have met Silicon
Knights on one E3 in LA.

You may look also for title called Fantasy Empires which is same like Steel
Empires but only fantasy setting.

Wish if someone makes a remake of these games, or Neuromancer, or Betrayal
at Krondor.

The trick was to speak nicely about Steel Empire. Because he was thinking
that nobody will remeber that game.

Yes! I enjoyed Cyber Empires quite a bit. Was there ever a sequel
or remake?

Well, I think that all those games were heavily influenced by Archon (see
arcade combat).

Now there are rumors or new Archon. On Playstation 1 there was a game called
The Unholy War which was designed by Paul Reiche III who worked on Archon
and this was OK game for it's time.
There was also game called Wrath Unleashed for PS2 and Xbox.

Cyber Empire or Steel Empire was limited with only one map. Instead of Too
Human it was better that they do a sequell.

Will people get tired finally of hack & slash games? Smile

"Cyber Empire" or "Steel Empire" or something like that. I used to play
it on the Amiga.

You had 9 different mechs, with small mechs optimized for urban combat
and larger and costlier mechz better for non-urban combat. It was also
possible to play in Strategic Mode where there were no arcade sequences;
fight results were then calculated.
