Its a shame to check this newsgroup after such a long time and find it
like a desert full of sand (messages) but with nothing of value or to
do with UO. Where are all those UO posts? Where are all the UO
questions? Where are the UO Tips and tricks? Why do we have to read
all this spam and some comments from some twerp that thinks we are
loners? One of the many reasons I think a lot have left this news
group is due to the Excessive Spam advertising on this board. So for
you spamers get your hint go spam elsewhere, and save your selfs some
time and us some harrasment. As for me I am sad to say I wont be
checking this message board for a while. Hope it gets better soon, and
I hope the messages that get posted soon have something to do with the
game and not something else.

UO's numbers have significantly dwindled, which I suppose would explain a
lot of it. When the shards start to become ghost towns, the fan sites and
resources will likely follow accordingly.

No,the crowd moved to the message boards, plenty of postings daily on
UOstratics.
Not that I consider this a good thing, usenet is much more convenient
to read, but who could resist the temptation to add a picture to his
sig ? Wink

Oh Absolutly! I mean when you cannot add anything content wise.... zip
things up with an awesome pic!

I absolutly HATE forum crawling. Leafing through the myraid of LOL and
"How True" and "TY" posts that just clutter your screen! It's a waste!

Particularly when most of the post is just that picture and a sig so they
can send a one-word post.

The debate went back and forth for a long time in the internet protocol
forums. Whether or not enforcing a no-binary rules except in binary
newsgroups, even to the point of banning html in posts. Should the X-
image rules be expanded to allow color. Should the sig rules be expanded.

It was a long debate about whether or not to expand newsgroup posts
making them 10x larger for the same amount of text content, or leave them
bare ascii. Both sides felt strongly that it would be the death of the
usenet. Would overloading the servers until only a few bothered to run
any be what killed usenet? Or would not allowing more personalization in
postings which people are getting used to on the web be what killed
usenet?

Personally I think we were stuck between a rock and a hard place. Both
were right.

Everything has its pros and cons. The fact that the worst of the clueless
newbies cant find their way here (unless some idiot shows them news.google)
is a slight benefit.

Which reminds me of a quote of mine that shows up sometimes....
"It used to be that you had to learn DOS to get to and learn UNIX to get
to and learn Internet. We had some rude people but no stupid ones. Then
Windows created "user friendly" connections and we got "users" who could
only use a computer but knew nothing about it. Then AOL created
foolproof connections for those who couldnt figure out Windows and we
got fools. Then WebTV created idiot-proof connections and it seems to be
doing a great job of it. Now we have Xbox but Ive run out of words."

Well, there are still some decent posters worth reading,of course
nothing like the Ice-Undertaker debates or postings from Dundee
here in the early UO-years.
My problem is more with the format of a forum compared to a
usenet-group.

Ah yes, of that I have no doubt. Still, after having watched my own shard
shrink to barely nothing, I have a fairly jaded view of UO's numbers. It is
also somewhat disturbing that EAMythic almost completely neglects other
fansites.

It's the incessant need for glitz and "bling". The USENET is still
very viable. But you are right. It's cumbersome to use to those that
want the instant gratification of a 2 mouse click pathway pretty
colors and the convenience of Web Forums.

USENET was the backbone of the Internet! It is the oldest part of the
internet too! It was developed to allow quick - CLEAR communication
avenues for passing information.

I will agree and add that it's not a slight benifit... rather a very
welcome benifit!

And then AOL happened, followed by posts from google and chinese
spammers...

Perhaps a metaphor might help:

1. Your emails are like sperm, ready to dash out and do their thing.
2. Your ISP is a prick.
3. APEWS is a condom.
4. We are innocent maidens who do not like surprises.
5. You are asking for one teeny hole in the rubber.
