Archived from groups: alt>games>tombraider (more info?)

It would seem that most folks today shun usenet newsgroups. And this
particular newsgroup, alt.games.tombraider, is where *ALL* the "online
community" began and carried the ball from Tombraider through Angel of
Darkness. Although, even with AoD, overall participation in this newsgroup
was less than normal for a new release in the Tombraider games. And much
less for Legend, and still less for Anniversary. Web based forums seem to
be where the "new community" gather to discuss all things Tombraider these
days. Folks relatively new to this scene apparently loathe and despise
Usenet as much as I loathe and despise web based forums. The prevailing
rail against Usenet is that folks find it difficult to use the newsgroups.
Astounding.

I didn't start this thread to rant. I would like to find a way to get the
EIDOS and Crystal Dynamics folks working with the Tombraider franchise to
have a look in these very few Usenet Tombraider/Lara Croft newsgroups.
Because I get the impression that there are a number of us that simply will
not use the web forums. And I feel that what each of us have to say is
important.

I *would* use the forums, IF a format were devised to display posts in a way
similar to what I see in Outlook Express or Agent. ie- a header/subject
line is displayed ( with selectable fields TO display) and the post itself
is NOT opened. Seems whoever designs the layouts for these web browser
forums simply threw all of us out that cut our teeth on Usenet, in a time
where there was no "web".

i'll tell you what......i miss it already and it's not quite gone. yet.

my isp has recently stopped allowing binary attachments, as well, so
downloading even an image from groups hosted by them is no longer
possible. groups on other servers, like corel or mozilla are still
allowed but anything hosted on my isp is now pretty much dead as can be.

how this stuff can be difficult is beyond me. it's no different than
email and everyone can do that. it's an excellent resource for
information that nobody seems to think has value anymore. which......to
be honest, baffles me to no end. even google no longer has 'groups' as
a choice without using the drop down 'more.' that's pathetic.

i guess all i'm saying is that i'm with you on this. i've seen the
decline over the last year and it's actually pretty disheartening that
people don't get it anymore. how simple it is to use, how available it
is and more importantly, the ability to exchange information WITHOUT
flashing banners, ugly avatars and overly long 'siggy's' containing
every image ever posted on the internet.

I'm with you guys.

There may be a significant "hidden" readership out here, though. Guys like
me, for instance. I still check this group daily, but, as we're between TRs
right now, I usually have little to say. But I'm here.

I really haven't messed much with website Forums. For one thing, which one?
Aren't there a bunch? I'm not gonna monitor several. There appears to be
just ONE major TR newsgroup (in English), and here we are.

I dunno. I got started with newsgroups in 1997, got used to them, they
still work exactly the same, and I like 'em.

And I've heard that some ISPs don't even carry them. To me, that's
"restriction of Internet access." Usenet is part of the Internet. Not
carrying it (or disabling binary loads) almost constitutes censoring the
Net, if you ask me.

One thing that has always fascinated me is the General Public's lack of
knowledge or misunderstanding of Usenet. I know "computer people" who say,
"Oh, yeah, I've heard about that. Huh." -- and that's it. It's this huge
resource that's completely off most people's radar -- almost a secret corner
of the Net.

I think one thing that has worked against it from the beginning is the
unfortunate use of the word Subscribe in selecting the newsgroups to view.
"Subscribe" sounds like money. Subscriptions cost money. I remember
thinking in the beginning, "Gee, if I 'subscribe' to these groups, is my ISP
going to charge me for them in my next bill?"

Another thing that has worked against Usenet is it's sheer openness and
people's inability to adapt to it -- leading to the phenomenon of Trolls.
An author I like had a wonderful newsgroup. She abandoned it to trolls.
They got to her. She couldn't handle the attacks. I remember arguing that
it was crystal-clear what these idiots were doing, that all her fans
instantly recognized them for what they were, and that she was CAVING to
them. But she left (and a similar author followed suit) for the security of
a web-based forum she could regulate. I found the format more trouble to
use and eventually stopped participating entirely. They won. The trolls
won. That pissed me off -- because it's so easy to beat them! You just
don't acknowledge their existence. Since attention is the only thing they
want, they're screwed. And it's no secret. You can TELL them that, and
there's nothing they can do, because they literally have the patience of
5-years-olds and there's nothing they can do about it. The groups that
still exist are hardy. The posters understand the psychology of the Troll,
and it's comic to see one struggle to surface these days. (People even
taunt them in some groups. It's hilarious. They've gone from Monsters to
funny little Sock-Puppets that pop up, and then disappear.)

Anyway. I'm with you guys. I still like the good ol' Usenet. If it's
becoming our little secret -- oh well. It's a nice little secret.

Agreed. And you don't have to sign up to every group you want to take an
active part in. I did sign up to a TR forum once. Can't even remember which
one it was now! Smile

For me, the forums seem so impersonal. Guess I will have to reload
Anniversary as I was waiting for a newer video card or a newer computer,
but too many to choose from.
When I do get something better, I might find my old copy of AOD and
reload that.

I would guess that part of the downturn of the usenet is the 'gotta have
NOW' mentality...why it may take <gasp> hours or...<big gasp> even days for
a message to get to everyone, where as with a web based forum (in theory)
everyone could see it as soon as you hit send.
I have a theory; its aol that is trying to kill the usenet.

Well... I've been lurking here for years. But it's one of the few
non-binaries newsgroups I still pay attention to. And as a casual TR
console user/player... I don't often have anything to contribute.

So many of the groups I used to participate in have been abandoned by
the people who made them interesting. Or I got tired of the trolls and
stopped going to them.

You go where your peers go.

> I really haven't messed much with website Forums.

For some topics, web based forums work. For others? Not so much. I used
to be very anti-web forum but for a troll and spam free experience they
work, if well managed. And for a small group of "friends".

> I dunno. I got started with newsgroups in 1997, got used to them, they

There are just too many ways to communicate on the Internet.

I started out with mailing lists back in 1985. Usenet starting in '87.
(I actually pay for USENet access. And have for eyars. A few bucks a
month to Giganews. Not that I have time to read the 10,000+ newsgroups
they make available...). And web forums in the last 5 years (I've got a
LiveJournal but that style of communication... doesn't really work for
me. Even a webforum is better than LiveJournal for online
"conversations". ). I haven't really gotten into instant messaging - not
since the 80's anyway.

The idea of having a newsreader (as in USENet, not rss) style interface
as an alternate interface for a web forum is an interesting idea.

There was a time not so long ago this ng had several dozen active posters
and a couple hundred more occasional posters. Of course nobody knows how
many lurkers there are except the actual ISP's. I started reading this
group in 96 and posting in early 97. It's been an interesting ride. I've
made some real life friends of a few people in this group. I miss a bunch
of folks that used to post here. I know that Izzy and Mary and Stef and Rex
and PW do still check in. But there are others that seem to have walked off
to another life. Sascha, Mustang, Silver, Gary. Heck I haven't even run a
TR game in a year. I have Legend installed on this rig someplace, oughtta
fire it up. I'll be getting Anniversary I think.
There are 'trainers' for it, I might be able to waddle through it that way
now Wink

My Comcast news server carries over 60,000 Usenet ng's. I read five of
them. Most of the games newsgroups have dried up. The new people don't
even know about usenet. If the world economy crashed and internet was
minimal, usenet would still be usable. Smile

The reasons I haven't got it yet are centered on the style of gameplay. I
am not nor will I ever be a console player. EIDOS and CD really seem to
want to push the TR franchise into the pro tournament arena. That pushes
this old fart right out of the way. I ain't that far from getting around
like old Winston does in the early TR's. A dozen years ago I probably
would have liked this new play style. I just can't do it anymore. SO, a
trainer means I can get through the game and see everything along the way.

I seriously doubt I will ever be a console player. The PC is my way of
playing. When people ask why I don't get a X-Box or something, I tell
them that is for games and the PC is for adventure playing.

Oh! Lovely to be remembered! I'm checking in McG! I have neglected this
group but I do read and lurk sometimes. I too miss all the people and the
funny little things we did re chocolate and birthdays. And who was it that
used to drink beer.

OT I belong to a few forum but the best ones are private ones for a few
friends with a mutual interest. I occasionally join others for games I'm
interested in and although they can appear impersonal you do get to know the
regulars. However, the bigger the group the less it is possible! I did
used to love this place in the days when you had to visit at least once a
day otherwise you would have 100s of posts to catch up on!

Oh right, chocolate and birthdays, brussels sprouts and bananna peels! And
a few of us used to drink beer. Some probably still do, but I've left it
alone. Yeah we all did have a good bit of fun together. A few frowns and
tears but rarely. Mostly a lot of fun and of course, Tombraider!
I think the ones that really enjoyed their beers are TomBraider and
PistolWhipped Very Happy

Forums. The only ones I have any interest in at all are the ones that
exist for support of products I own. And they are the dickens to get around
in, they're so huge.

Nice to see ya pop in! Hope you and yours are all well Smile
