I was trying out some UT maps I'd downloaded from Filefront. One
wouldn't play; something about not finding some class in a file called
snow. Usually means two people gave two different files the same
name, and I've got the one that belongs to another map.
I check the file info with the one in the zip, and find I've got the
right one. So I do a search for files called snow. There's a sound
file called snow. I move it to another directory, and the map loads
fine.
You'd think the program would be looking for program code only in *.u
files, and only look for audio data in *.aux files. Now it makes me
wonder, if i renamed all the files so they didn't have an extension,
then dropped them all in a folder called, hmm, "whatever", and put
that directory in the .ini, would the game still be able to play? |

The game does actually use the directory structure. Don't confuse installed
files with a cache file. If you move a system file into say the texture
folder, the game will no longer be able to see it until it gets put back
into the proper folder. |

I rarely play online, so none of what I'm talking about is a cached
file. I downloaded a zip from FileFront (a lot of zips, actually). I
placed the files appropriately. I did not add "server file" lines
into the .ini, but I don't think a practice session looks at those
lines.
Appropriately for me means, I have extra folders I call mapsmore,
musicmore, etc for extra levels I've downloaded and consider good
enough to play again. Then when I download new maps, I put the files
in folders called *test. That way, once I'm done testing the maps, I
can just dump the extra files into a storage folder. And when I build
a new computer, or reinstall Windows, I just drag the more folders to
the new install, and the only folder I have to sort through is System.
(*.int's and *.ini's can't be found anywhere else, as far as I can
tell. I do have a systemtest, but not a systemmore.) |

I can see what you are doing, but wouldn't it just be easier to place them
in the proper folder, and if you don't want them just sort by date added and
remove them easily? I'll have to test that but I'd be very surprised if UT
could see anything outside of default folders. |

I wonder if including a path statement in a launch batch file would work it
been a long while since I tried anything so esoteric

It would launch, I'm sure but then the engine would look into the default
folders only. Think editor on this: when you cruise in the ed, it knows the
right folder for what type of file you are looking for. |

In the ut2004.ini (UnrealTournament.ini in the original), under the
heading [Core.System], there are, by default, these lines:
Paths=../System/*.u
Paths=../Maps/*.ut2
Paths=../Textures/*.utx
etc.
I simply add these lines:
Paths=../MapsMore/*.ut2
Paths=../TexturesMore/*.utx
Paths=../SoundsMore/*.uax
etc.
and
Paths=../MapsWork/*.ut2
Paths=../SystemTest/*.u
Paths=../TexturesTest/*.utx
Paths=../SoundsTest/*.uax
etc.
It works fine. Except, as I said in the original post, there are no
lines for things like *.ini, *.int, etc. So I have to put all those
files in the system folder.
As for sorting by date, there are three kinds of files: default files
which came with the game, files that are required by add-on maps that
I like, and files which are required for maps that are so-so or are
completely garbage. I suppose I could get a utitlity to change the
date stamp on files, and give everything a date of say, July 21, 1966,
at 8:45 pm. Then everything else would be something I could remove.
But the extra folders isn't that difficult.
The problem with UT2k4 are these two lines:
MusicPath=../Music
SpeechPath=../Speech
I don't have any extra speech files, but how do I keep my extra *.ogg
files in MusicMore and MusicTest directories?
By the way, does anyone know if I need to keep files that end in frt,
itt, kot, est, and det? They look like foreign language versions of
the .int files.
Thanks. |
