I downloaded the manual:
http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket939/A8N-SLI%20Premium/e2435_...-sli_pr

Section 2.1 mentions an on-board LED, which seems to relate to SLI warnings.
Might be worth taking a look there. If you've installed two graphics cards,
there's something called an Asus EZ-Plug that's required. It's just a Molex
socket (to fit standard CD-ROM power plug) for extra power at the gfx slots.
It sits just above the top gfx card. If you haven't plugged in EZ-Plug
properly, and if you have two gfx cards, then a red LED will be illuminated
alongside.

Chapter 6 explains SLI installation. It looks fairly straightforward.

- one card in each slot.
- connect SLI lead between two.
- connect EZ-Plug.

There's then settings which need to be changed in Nview, to enable multi-GPU
support. But I imagine your problems lie before that stage somehow! Wink

Yes, according to page 6-5, I may be missing the sli connector, but,
the goldfinger connector looks like it is on the bottom of the card and
not on top.
Of course, like you mentioned, the problem I have might be before this.

Just a thought - I take it that the CPU cooler is well installed, with
thermal compound, and that the CPU fan is plugged in and working?

If you haven't connected the cards together, I think that will be the
problem. What exact cards are they? I.e. what make?

Both cards are GForce 6600 DDR 256mb pci-e. I found the sli connector,
but the only place to hook it up appears to be the side of the card
attached to the Pci-e slot.
I am having someone else take a look at it right now. It does look as
though one of the fans may not be working. I don't have the system with
me right now, but may have it later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for everyones help here. I took it to someone I knew that took
it apart and there was lots of dog hair in it. I guess the previous
owner did not take care of it. Lots of cable hooked up at one end and
laying loose at the other end.
Power problem seems to be fan related. The duo geforce 6600 ddr 256mb
pci-e are NOT sli compatible cards. Might have to search for a couple of
8800 cards maybe.
Thanks again.

A single 8800GTX is faster, more powerful, than two 7800GTX in SLI. Just
thought you might want to know that tidbit. And I just bought 1 8800GTX
for a little over $300.00 This same BFG OC card was over $700.00 last
year. Smile)

You may do best just getting the one 8800GT. IMHO, one decent card is better
than two mediocre ones. My nephew had two 7300s in his Mesh PC originally.
They were soundly trounced by my single 7600GT at the time. I currently have
the one 8800GTX (if I was buying today I'd get the GT), and it runs
everything I throw at it. It will have no trouble with either of the last
TRs, and I reckon it will be perfectly capable of the next one too.

I was a little suspicious of those cards being SLI, as they should have the
top connector.

Oops...should have read your reply before mine! Smile

From what I read though, the 8800GT is now a better buy than the GTX. It's
less power hungry, and virtually matches it on performance! Still, our GTXs
make for a nice room heater! Wink

Mmmm I think our GTX's do more with a frame of image than the GT does. I
don't know about it being a room heater. I have two fans in the side
bringing air in right on the vid card. The thing that concerned me is the
size of the card itself. Thing is HUGE.

Tell me about it. It was cramped enough in my old case, but due to rising
temps, I bought an Antec P182 case - which is pretty big. Even then I cannot
use the middle drive caddy, due to the card's size...and that's with the end
bracket having been removed.

I really thought that the GT was very close to the GTX in performance
though. In part due to the smaller fabrication size of the GPU. If the GTX
is still much better, then I'm happy. Smile

As far as I can tell in speed charts and comparison table, the 8800GTX 768
meg card is only outrun by the 8800 Ultra and the new 9800 GX2 QuadSLI.
See what you think from the chart at this site.

Fair dos. Though the list at the bottom doesn't really show just how much
more performance the GTX has over the GT.

I've based most of my beliefs on this article from PC Pro.

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/163/graphics-cards/products.html

Admittedly the GTXs have fallen in price, which does change the story
somewhat. But the 8800GTs are around £125, whilst the GTX is still around
£170 at the very bottom end (the nVidia generic one that I bought in
February for £235). Most GTXs command a much higher price still, for very
little performance gain. This shows the potential framerate gain of the GTX
for a few different games.
http://uk.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26010277

One other thing to consider - the 8800GTX will require two PCI-e power
connectors, whereas the GT will require just one.

Albert - does your power supply have those one or two of those connectors?

My PSU two. Also, I'm not in the UK and I expect the prices are a little
higher there than here.
The chart does show the throughput BW (bandwidth) of the GT's and GTX's.

I don't see any 8800GT. But the 8800GTS has 20 ROP's and 64GBps bandwidth
with 512 megs DDR3. The GTX has 24 ROP's and 768 megs DDR3 with 86 GBps
bandwidth.
But I didn't get the 8800GTX just for games. I got it for the realtime
hardware shader rendering in OpenGL, which is useful in 3 of the 3D packages
I have. Speeds up the OGL previews and the renders, particularly when
shaders are used. The GTX has 128 pixel shaders and 128 vertex shaders.
Again, very useful in 3D as well as games.

I didn't find your gamespot article very informative. I usually don't find
much useful at gamespot anyway.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/13603/5

I will grant you, the GT being about half the price of the GTX is kinda
persuasive though. But not for me, not for this rig and what I'm doing with
it.

Not sure if the power supply has those two connections. Doing further
reading on it. The 500 W power supply might still be causing problems.
The computer will run and sometimes shuts down during boot up and other
times will run as long as 3 hours.
