Post subject: Any game recommendations?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>games>strategic (more info?)

Hello all. I've been playing the Total War games for ages and I'm
looking for something similar. I like games that combine turn-based
strategy with real-time battles. Unfortunately I can't find anything as
good as Rome: Total War. I tried Age Of Empires III, but it was
rubbish. I prefer turn-based games and there was no strategy at all in
the battles, just a shambolic melee. The AI was virtually none existent
too. Each individual person needs to be told what to do, otherwise they
just stand there, even when they are being shot!! I've heard of another
game called Imperial Glory but everyone I've spoken to says it's a poor
imitation of the Total War games. Anyone got any other recommendations?
TIA

I switch between Rome Total War and Dominions 2 most of the time. The
Dom 2 battles aren't real time but they are, sort of. You give your
armies battle orders to complete when they come in contact with the
enemy. When two armies fight the units in them try to complete their
orders if possible, and then do what their AI says to do next (usually
charge or sit back and cast spells).

Over on comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical, they just did a user poll on
best wargame for 2005. The top vote getters were:

1. Crown of Glory (Napoleonic Wars)
2. Hearts of Iron II (WWII)
3. Silent Hunter III (U-boats in WWII)

Of the three, CoG seems to best fit your desires. Only available through
on-line sales, either direct download or shipped.
