It's a device by which trains change tracks, according to the
Wiktionary.
(It can also be "a fielding position square of the wicket on the off
side, between gully and cover", but I don't understand that at all.)

But what if the train has a clockwork mechanism that needs
winding up? What would be the point, I ask?  (LOL!)
