Sometimes i read the different opinions about Laserdisc Fans. There are
some guys who say the Pioneer CLD 97 is the greatest player, others prefer
the exotic Japanese Models...I guess we have to respect everyone's
opinion. I'm not here also to say i have the Perfect Home Theater but i
love to talk about this, and i'm happy some guys reach the Perfect
theater.
I was impressed when i saw the picture of the players of Nin, (i guess):
WOOWW

- 2 Pioneer HLD X9
- 1 Pioneer HLD X0

But yesterday i saw a thread from 2005, and i guy was telling he's LD
system had:

-2 Pioneer HLD X9
-1 Pioneer HLD X0
-1 Pioneer LD X1
-3 Muse Decoders

Man...This is the BEST SYSTEM I'VE HEARD UNTIL TODAY! I wiash i had one,
but i'm very happy with my single Pioneer HLD X9 Smile

Nin why not a CLD 97 or the BEAST PIONEER LD X1 (LD S2 US VERSION)?
Don't you like that player?

Both HLD-X9 and HLD-X0 are better than the CLD-97

Just a matter of opinion, of course.

Probably, and my own personal opinion is the Pioneer (and the other
usual suspect, of course, but mostly Pioneer) made TOO MANY MODELS of
LaserDisc player. If you look at the "LaserDisc archive UK" website,
the owner has them listed by year, with an unsorted section at the
bottom. Some years have more than twenty entries!
While there's a certain justification for producing a range of
models, with different feature sets for different requirements and
price points, I really think they produced more than the market
justified. Concentrating on fewer types would probably have made the
players significantly less expensive, even with a broader feature set
on each player to allow it to suit a larger market niche.

From everything I've read, for all-around usefulness to the
consumer-level user, particularly one who has some interest in playing
back MUSE discs, the HLD-X9 is the way to go, and that's really the
only one I want to get now that I have two 704s. Others, with
different requirements, might want to forego the double-side play and
advanced video processing of the X9 for the low-noise performance of
the X0, or have some other particlar models in mind, but does anyone
even care anymore about the difference between the CLD-737 and CLD-757?

Matter of opionion YES. After defaulting my CLD-97 DNR to OFF verses the
factory ON and fine tuning the 97 I prefer it to the X9 I had also fine
tuned.

I'd love to see a X0 as I probably would prefer the X0 picture over the 97
but would keep the 97 just because it is dual sided. I have seen the LD-S2
do remarkable things, Clean picture and be the only player to have a clean
picture where others players had herringbone patterns in the picture. The
X0 sounds like it is everything the S2 is and more.

I have only found one person that prefer the CLD-97 over the X9, and
that is Kurtis. Well, it maybe are some the owns a CLD-97 and will say
it's better than anything on this earth, but I don't regard these
people as serious and something to listen to.
All other that have tried both, or all three, are saying the japanese
players are better.

Maybe I could borrow a friends kurtis tweaked CLD-97 and do some
indepth screenshots and post it later... Wink

In conversations I have had with Duncan of Bayview Electronics, who
has worked on laser disk players since day one. I do believe his
choice player is an Elite CLD-95.
Though I have never had the opportunity to see any Japanese model in
action, I do like my CLD-D704 very well.

Just my 2 cents worth,
Ed

My high-end player is the LD-S2, and it beats my CLD-79 in every
conceivable category. The picture of the LD-S2 is rock solid and
nearly DVD-like for later-pressed LDs. I run the composite output into
my Crystal Vision VPS-1 2D adaptive external comb filter, and then the
s-video into my (antiquated) 32" analog SDTV.

I just saw the following auction on eBay for one today, but, alas,
someone beat me to the "Buy It Now" punch. Dayum!:

Hah! I'll see your rather paltry LD player stable with my:

All Pioneer (and in order of picture quality): LD-S2, CLD-79, CLD-1010,
CLD-3070, and... LD-V4200. The LD-V4200 was free from a neighbor who
wanted to be rid of it, yet didn't have the fortitude to pitch it in
the trash.

Is this the order in which you would rank their performance regarding
PQ?

I know another that prefers the CLD-95, Stephen Sank who is an expert for
repairing Nakamichi Cassette Decks.

It all really comes down to preferences.

I really like the CLD-97 but that is because it has an analog look in the
background. If you are using a digital TV you just lost the analog look so
the 97 may not be the best choice. I did use the X9 when connected directly
to my HDTV as it's Adaptive filter was better than the one in the HDTV.
After I bought a used Faroudja NRS scalar the CLD-97 worked better with it
as the X9 is not as low noise with the DNR OFF but the DNR in the X9 along
with the DNR in the Faroudja did not work as good as the 97 in the Faroudja.

Now if you don't mind the digital type background look then the
704/79/99/S9/X9 are very good deal with the X9 being the only player without
the white streaking problems.

So all these players are good, the 95/97/S2/X0 are designs for the analog
era and the 703/704/79/99/S9/X9 use the digital DNR designs.

I just prefer analog designs but I do have to modify the 97 to default to
DNR OFF each time a LD is installed, the 97 only has DNR ON/OFF and chroma
and lumance is tied together. The S2 defaults to lumance OFF and Chroma ON
which is my preference. I'd love to see the X0 as if I has keeping a single
sided player it would be the S2 or X0.

Kurtis
