I mostly skipped the last generation of consoles, the xbox/ps2/gamcube
consoles. Just played on friends' various systems. From what I've
read here 'n there, the xbox has been completely hacked/broken and
free games are everywhere. I don't know about the PS2 and Gamecube
but I don't think they are as widely hacked...I know at least two guys
who seem to have never paid for a single Xbox game...
Do you think the next-gen systems will be hacked fairly quickly, or
will their manufacturers go all-out and attempt to thwart hackers?
I've read that some of them are going to go the DirecTv route and
constantly update the systems' BIOS via the online gaming systems,
plus by adding code to game discs as they are released...and
installing such code will not announced or optional.
What do y'all think? |

There are more illegal copies of PS2 games out there than any other by far. |

Right now, it appears that all three next-gen consoles will use DVD for
their games. DVD burners (even the dual-layer ones) are cheap right now
and will only get cheaper...
Also, no copy protection will ever be 100% effective. At best, they can
make it inconvienent or difficult, but never fully prevent copying.
You can rest assured that the new consoles will be hacked before they hit
the shelves, with things like modchips on the market within weeks of the
console's debut. |

Have any of the recent consoles been hacked, BEFORE they hit the shelves? I
know that there were hacks eventually but I do not remember hearing Xbox or
PS2 hacks before they hit shelves and the GC hack took a fairly long time. |

Actually, I was thinking that since the PS3 will come out in Japan before
here, by the time it comes out here (or Europe) it'll have already been
hacked.
Didn't it only take 2 months before people had chips for XBox, and had
linux booting up on it?
Gamecube was tougher mainly because of its propreitary media. I know
Revolution will play DVDs as well as Game Cube games. I wonder if that
means that Revolution's games will use a 5" Game Cube-like discs? |

Man, you sure bounce around alot. How does 2 months (Xbox) equate to
before it hits the shelves? And doesn't Japan have shelves too Doug? ;P
You're right about the gamecube. Those discs, the bar code on them,
and, and the size definitely has made pirating real shitty. Gamecube
has a modchip now, but as I understand it, many still use the PSO
exploit and stream games via the BBA which results in alot of choppy
games.
I'll eat my words if I'm wrong but I DO NOT believe the Xbox will be
hacked so speedily this time around. I think part of that will be due
to the PPC arch; however, if things go as MS hopes with marketplace and
live connectivity, they won't be too worried about that loss anyways.... |

Copy protection chip? Is that right next to the "doo-hickey or thingy"?
Seriously, sucessions of the Xbox 1 have been increasingly difficult to
hack Granted the 1.6 has been but not by many of the traditional means
(i.e. the lpc bus has been disabled and/or soldered so my mod chip
wouldn not work).
>"There's already a Linux distro that

Yeah. It's called OS X ;>)
The xbox arch isn't a standard PPC arch, it'll be different (obviously)
because its completely in house, and it'll take 'em a little (if not
alot) longer; that's all I said and all I'm saying But like I said
MS may not care two cents anyways because nobody wtih a mod will be
playing very long on LIVE. |

Well, switching architectures will certainly make it a bit more difficult
to get all the media-player hacks running. But I really don't think it'll
be too hard for hackers to defeat the copy protection chip, and after that
I'm guessing the first thing they'll do is get Linux running on the thing,
followed by MacOS - just for fun. There's already a Linux distro that
runs on the PowerPC architecture so that should be too difficult. |
