Post subject: New computer, can't install some expansions
Archived from groups: alt>games>the-sims (more info?)

Long-time lurker, first time poster, diehard simmer. I know there's a
lot of PC savvy people here and I hope someone can help.

I have a brand new PC running Win XP. One of the first things I wanted to
do was install all my Sims games onto the new box, since Sims doesn't
play too well on my older laptop. (I had no problem installing anything
on my laptop.)

Here's what happens. Base game (DVD) installs flawlessly. First EP
(AL) seemed to install flawlessly up to a point. At the point where it
asks to remove disk#2 and replace with disk#1, I have seen the progress
bar hit 100%. When I put in disk#1, the AL splash screen opens and it
totally freezes. CtrlAltDel doesn't even work. Each attempt yields the
identical results. Oddly enough, this happens with EVERY multi-disk EP.
Single disk EPS and Stuff Packs install perfectly.

I have tried the following - installing directly from the hard drive,
installing in safe mode, and each time the results are identical. Full
install, then freeze. I've turned off the antivirus and other non-
essential processes. This is driving me batty! Ideas, anyone?

System info - all drivers up to date.
Motherboard - XFX nVidia 780i
CPU- Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 (3.33 GHz, FSB1333, 6 MB L2, 65W)
Ram- OCZ DDR2-800 Reaper 1024MB (4)
Video Card - XFX GeForce GTX 280 1GB
HD - Western Digital SATA VelociRaptor 300GB
Secondary Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB
CD / DVD Rom- Pioneer 20X DVD-RW SATA DVR-216DBK
2nd CD / DVD Rom -Pioneer 20X DVD-RW SATA DVR-216DBK
Windows XP Pro SP3

Thanks,

How long are you waiting before giving up? Some of those EPs took
forever to install on my computer, too, if I remember right. I just let
it sit there till it finished. It eventually did. Try cleaning your
disks. If you have a second DVD drive, try using it. I have two drives
-- the top is a player only and the second one is a burner/player.
Everything installs much faster if I use the burner.

Thanks Jeanie - On one attempt, I actually let it sit overnight when I
went to bed. It was still frozen the next morning. Task Manager
indicates that the file sims2ep1.exe is the file that is hanging. On
subsequent attempts with other two disk EPs, is the same .exe file (i.e.
sims2ep2.exe) that hangs.

It doesn't matter which DVD-rom drive I use. Actually, I have used both
at the same time to eliminate disk swapping, but the end result is always
the same. I am totally frustrated with this.

Happy New Year!

Silly question, but I assume you have tried not using both at the same time,
just sticking to one? Not that I can see why that should help, but, you
never know.

There are no silly questions. Smile Yes, I have tried using one drive at a
time. The result is always the same. Even when I copy the disks to the
hard drive and install that way, it's the same. Apparently there is
something not right with the way my PC is handling the data, that Sims2
doesn't like. Bleahh.

Oh well, it was a thought. I am not experienced enough to be able to spot
anything "wrong" with your set up, and haven't had any problem installing,
so I can't really help.;-/

Try this--- if I remember correctly,

When putting in the next disk keep your finger on the "Shift" key until the
next disk settles down and any spin or light goes out.

Then press on the "OK" button as you are told. The next disk should then be
read.

Depressing the Shift key should stop any automatic start of the newly
entered disk and any duplication of commands which mucks up the system with
some dvd drives.

That worked for me,

I also changed the rules for what the dvd/cd drive does when a disk is put
in to get rid of the automatic "Play".

I sympathise with you as I am now currently trying to reconcile the original
and earlier expansions with my new laptop with Vista Premium. That's even
worse in my opinion. The first thing Vista told me was that the first game
might have "problems" with it!

I have three gaming computers here; all have ATI cards in them,
and all are dead (blue screen that is blaming ATI).
I now also have a laptop with Home Premium. Base game loads and
plays fine, and makes like it is saving. None of the EPs will
run. Uninstalling the EPs allows me to play the base game, but
nothing saved. Frigging Eaxis and MicroShaft did not even make
an EA/Sims2 folder in Documents. How does one configure saves,
etc. in Vista?

Thank you for the reply. Hope you can resolve your Vista issues soon!

Unfortunately, the shift key hold didn't help my problem. I don't
understand why it gets to 100% install and then hangs.

When it hangs, Task Manager indicates that the following Sims processes
are active: Autorun, sims2EP1.exe, and ~5.001 . sims2EP1.exe is the
only process that is so frozen that only a forced reboot ends it.

As a sanity check, I successfully installed the same base game and Uni
disks on a different (much older) PC also running XP SP3, and they
installed fine. For the life of me I can't figure out what the new PC
doesn't like about the installation.

I eventually got my game installed ok with all the expansions up to "Mansion
and Garden stuff on my new laptop and it runs fine now with no problems. I
have added no mods, downloads or changed anything so far.

I didn't use the auto-install options for the main game and any expansions
until I got to the ones that recognised Vista.
It took ages but I used the "Open folders" option for every disk and right
clicked the Autorun.exe and changed the "Properties" to run in compatability
mode with Windows.XP. It took all day to install.

When I found the later Install guides mentioning Vista I auto-installed and
they apparently worked ok and seemed to change the game to work correctly.
Maybe they redirected it?.

I don't have a proper video card but some type of Intel video. ie.Mobile
Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family.
It still gives me a rating of 3.7 on the gaming scale though as I have 4G of
Ram.

Congratulations -- at least you'll be able to play! Isn't there a
setting somewhere in Windows that allows you to assign a certain amount
of RAM to video?

My daughter got a laptop for Christmas that runs Vista. She installed
the game and all expansions up to Bon Voyage. She is unable to get
online with the laptop yet because they do not have a wireless router
yet and her cable modem can't be switched from her desktop to the
laptop, so she hasn't patched anything. She has no downloads or stuff
packs. The laptop is able to handle the game better than the old
desktop did -- it was barely up to minimum specs for the game itself.
But I noticed that she did not have fish showing in her ponds. I doubt
if her laptop has a video card and probably runs onboard graphics, too.
She didn't have any trouble getting any of the disks to install, though.
