Hello MAME fans. I wanted to know what mame is good for a slower linux
box. I want a frontend preferablly built in.
I have a 733 MHz celeron and 318 MB of ram.
Is there a way I can compile MAME to optimize it for my computer.
I'm using KDE
Thanks for any suggestions. |

IIRC the 0.6 versions of mame were what I used to use on a P3 450MHz
and it ran most games at full speed, and by most I mean all the ones I
tried, which was quite a few.
What you need to do is to look around for a romset in the 0.6 version
region that has all the games that you want, and get a version of mame
to match, that's usually easier than trying to get roms to match the
game!
In theory you can use something like clrmamepro but it's windows only
and every time I've tried to use it it's either crashed or hasn't made
any sense at all.

I had a 666 MHz/256 MB Linux box that was able to run Neo-Geo and CPS-2
games in SDLMAME without frameskipping, so there shouldn't be a reason
to mess around with getting an ancient version working.
Make sure you specify the right CPU in the makefile. You may also have
to use "-video opengl16", depending on the age of your video card. |

I had a 1.6GHz machine that couldn't even run asteroids without
frameskip in a recent version of mame, earlier versions had much
smaller CPU requirements than more recent versions as there was much
more hackery going on and less emulation.

Might be a configuration or hardware issue. All classics work fine on my
333 MHZ notebook but Phoenix, which is a slide show.
