I only found one in my search. The author seemed less than thrilled
with it, so I didn't bother downloading it. I just need to play one
game, archon adept.

Thanks, Bell. I don't think it's the same one. I'll give it a shot
tommorrow night.

I've got the game running on a DOS-based PC emulator, but I just think
the PC is a lame platform for gaming since it has no default
controller like a console does. For DOS-based emulators you have to
use joytokey to even use most controllers. Ugh.

I'm making much better money now at a new job. A lot of n64 pieces
that I used to miss out on are starting to fall. I think I am going to
buy an original xbox soon and try to hack it. Or maybe I'll just buy
one that has been profesionally hacked Very Happy

Not sure if this is the one you came up with, but it's the only one I
can find:

There are quite a few Galaga clones out there as well. Try MAWS for more
info on that:

I can understand...a lot of purists have these same thoughts. To me,
though, as long as something still plays well, I'll put up with it. I
mean, I play Ray Force on a horizontal screen all the time. It's nice,
when I tip my widescreen laptop on its side, but I can live without it.

Yeah. Guardian Heroes is the main one that you'll hear about, and with
good reason: It's one of the best 2D beat'em ups of all time. There are
others, but I just can't think of anything off the top of my head(the
Saturn is probably my least favorite of the Sega consoles, though I
still love it).

Three Dirty Dwarves is the other major game in that category. Interesting
boss battles, slightly off-kilter modern setting, and a premise not rooted
in mythology or anime. I'm pretty sure that other brawler-styled games are
ports from Neo Geo, or otherwise weren't exclusive titles.

-KKC, ready to give Universe At War a try. If he can get it to run.

I was going to mention TDD, but as it came out on PC it's not exclusive
to the Saturn.

What is TDD? I love 2d sidescrollers. Obviously the Genesis had
plenty with maximum carnage, the SOR series, the Golden Axes, etc.
There's some damn good ones on capcom's PS2 collection Volume 2.
Captain commandos is AWESOME. For a few good ones I might even be
willing to buy a saturn. I'll do some research on the ones you guys
listed, thanks.

I didn't know about the PC version, thanks for the heads up. Was it a
simultaneous Segasoft release, or was it one of those Expert budget titles
that they put out with the in-house emulator after the fact?

I'm not sure when it came out, but I've seen it from time to time. I've
seen it in both the regular packaging and the "Expert" budget re-release.

I haven't messed with the PC version, but I'd guess it's another
sub-part Saturn port. Sad

> What is TDD?

It's a beat'em up where you control a group of dwarves(three, to be
exact). While you attack whoever, the computer will control the other
two to help you out(you can also play with up to two buddies for three
player action). There's a lot of teamwork where you'll all jump together
to morph in to a sort of "super" dwarf. It's pretty hip, has a great
soundtrack too. Not for everyone though...it's one of those "love it or
hate it" sort of things.

Try YouTube for some footage, I'm sure there will be plenty for both TDD
and Guardian Heroes. Also, *please* don't do the typical "God, GH LOOKS
HORRIBLE!!! I will never play a game that looks that bad!" thing that we
are accustomed to here in RGVS(I cannot tell you how many people have
posted that, without ever trying the game. Even magazines did it, just
look up the horrid EGM review).

Trust me, no amount of screenshots or shitty YouTube video can ever help
one get a full grasp on how the system handles the scaling of the
graphics and such. It's something that has to be seen and played, to be
believed. It's incredible.

Its really cool. It takes the whole upgrading your ship to a whole
other level, you make your ship huge and you really have strobing
firepower. Try it if you get a chance.

Well, as far as number of titles goes, just like the PSX did, it
definitely holds an advantage compared to the others. Lately I have
been digging the Neo Geo compilations like Art of Fighting and Fatal
Fury ones. I see that they are releasing a KoF, Sam Sho, World Heroes
and an arcade classics one with Art of Fighting, Baseball Stars 2,
Burning Fight, Fatal Fury, KOF94, King of the Monsters, Last Resort,
Magician Lord, Metal Slug, Neo Turf Masters, Samurai Shodown, Sengoku,
Shock Troopers, Super SIdekicks3, Top Hunter, World Heroes.

Kind of lame if you bought the other ones so there would be some
repeated games but I think I would get it for KoF '94, Magician Lord,
Metal Slug and Sam Sho alone. The real early fighters on Neo Geo like
AoF, Fatal Fury and World Heroes were pretty horrible IMHO, too bad
they didn't put some the later ones in there instead.

Other than the Smash Pack sucking balls I can't agree with any of
this. DC had tons of great 3D capabilities, you don't remember how
mind blowing Soul Calibur was? It was a launch game too! Thats why
the hype for PS2 was so distressing to me up to and for a good while
after its launch, DC had way more quality titles and was a much better
value. As far as the going with the GD-ROM instead of the DVD, well
that certainly would have added to the price at the time. For me,
being able to watch movies is a nice plus but 99% of time I am using
the console to play games. Hell, you can get a progressive scan DVD
player for $30 new, why use a console to watch movies.

I'm definitely going to download it and play it soon.

I never sweat getting repeats. When it comes to compilations that just
comes with the territory. I got over that a long time ago. You have to
take the good with the bad.

Well, I think it did have 3D capabilities. It certainly should have
given the timeline. It's just that no major titles ever really caught
anyone's attention. From a casual gamer's perspective (what I have
always been), no dreamcast game ever really got everyone talking. I
barely remember the launch at all. I just remember the system coming
out of seemingly nowhere and setting there with high price tags on
unrecognizable titles that received zero hype. I used to just walk
right past the dreamcast stuff to get to the n64 stuff.

It's just convenient to use your console as a DVD player. One less
thing hogging up an outlet plug. I'm pretty disappointed that the Wii
wasn't given this capability after the disaster that the gamecube was.
Granted, it hasn't hurt the Wii sales at all, but it's still a
boneheaded mistake nonetheless.

I've heard this before about AO...and I remember Dan Jevons(Knightmare)
from GameFan pleading with Working Designs to try to speed up some of
the battles before they brought it to the US, but I'm guessing that
never happened. You're right though, as mediocre as I've heard the game
is, I *still* want to try it out due to those gorgeous screenshots. Wink

If I recall correctly, the US release has fewer random encounters than the
Japanese version, and you earn more experience points when you win battles
to balance it out. It's possible to finish the American version without
having to spend so much time levelling up, although it's still a chore
relative to other JRPGs of the day. I can't remember if I actually own a
copy of the JPN-region disk, so I'll check when I get a chance.
