"cowquest; theoquest; bardtest; barbariantest; nestart;" is what I've
typed and it just doesn't work with Hellfire 1.01. Is there a trick to
getting this working?

TIA,

NM, it turns out Windows XP uses hidden file extensions that don't show
up even in the file's properties. Amazingly bad design... *shakes head*

Amazingly bad design? In a Micro$oft product?? Surely not.

Umm, you can unhide file extensions (for known file types) in folder
properties. I'm fairly sure I've had the above working in Hellfire on XP.
(Oh, you know you typo'd "netstart" right?)

And you can also right click on the file, choose to change the file
extension and pick what extensions you want from a drop down list.
It'll even do that auto-complete thing. At least the version of XP on
the laptop at work does that. My computer here isn't, but that may
just be because I'm not hiding the file extensions.

That's no typo unless Jarulf's and other guides are wrong. How does one
get file extensions to at least show up in a file's properties? It's
just insane they don't show there. Whoever made that decision should be
fired and blacklisted from ever working in the tech industry again.

S'been a while but I could have sworn it was supposed to be "netstart;"

> How does

Open a folder, the one in question is a good start, go to "Tools", click
"Folder Options" then the "View" tab. In that list you'll see a check mark
in a box that says "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck it. I do
with every XP install I do (that isn't for a l-user). While I'm in there I
also change to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected
operating system files". (But that's just me.) Then I click "Apply", then
"Apply to all folders" at the top and Bob's yer uncle.

I'm not touching that one. <g>

Heh, I imagine it has Smile How long since you played D1 SP? MP? Hellfire?
I try to play D1 once every six months. I still get a buzz entering the
first few levels that I never got in D2. D1 is just plain creepier Smile

Many thanks, I'm the first to admit my Windows skills are rudimentary. I
like to get done what's necessary and then get back to my Mac.

I'm the same. I always change those settings, it's pretty much the very
first thing I do with a new XP install. <g>
