What are the real benefits of someone upgrading from a 720p TV to a 1080p
TV?
I know you get a better resolution, but by the looks of it, few Xbox 360 and
PS3 games support this resolution anyway. Plus there is the negative of
standard TV viewing looking a bit worse with the higher sized TV you get
anyway.
Are we going to have a situation where by the time all games support 1080p,
newer 2160p TVs will be released and people will want to upgrade further? |

So in a nutshell, not much point then? |

While not directly related to the 1080p question, we bought a 32" LCD a
couple of years ago and ending up settling for a decent Samsung - I checked
all the relative specs and compared against different sets, and the only
real difference was that it only had one HDMI input against the 2 or 3 of
sets that were more expensive.
At the time this didn't seem all that important as I had cube and Wii
running off component, and Sky plus from Scart, and didn't see a time where
I would need even one HDMI input.
In the last few months I've bought a 360 and the new Humax Freesat HD PVR,
both of which use HDMI so have had to buy a switcher (remember the famous
Argos Scart switcher?, well it's like that only much smaller!) - while the
TV is great I wish I'd bought something a little more future proof.
The next time I buy a TV I'll certainly buy the highest spec I can within my
budget, but if that meant spending a little extra for a couple of more years
'future proofing' then I would.

A couple of years ago 1 HDMI port would have been the rage. Now most of
them come with 3. Couple of years from now will we be needing 5 of the
buggers? Or will they be using the next port type they can think of? |

You can get away with one if you feed through other devices though. At
least they're about a 10th of the size of bloody scart. Talking of
upgrade hell I've just bought a new surround sound amp that can accept 4
HDMI inputs - that's the PS3 and 360 covered for now with two spare for
a HD PVR box and... um, I'm struggling to think of anything as I may
move the standalone DVD player as the PS3 will do the job better. And I
already have three on the back of my TV. I should be covered for a
while, I hope. |
