im confused as to the definition of the following:

escort target: i assume this means the same target of the ship im
escorting.

movement target: i have no clue what this means.

Firing target: is this the target that is firing at me or my escort?
or does it refer to the target im firing at currently?

Firing Targets as Movement Targets Use the escort target's firing
targets as movement targets (mutually
exclusive with the previous switch). uuummmm what? totally lost here,
whats the difference? if any.

Perhaps one of these switches actually means stay close to your escort
target to act as a carrier screening vessel? much like modern naval
carrier fleets operate now?

Unfortunately the text currently does not distinct between player
chosen target (via client) and code chosen target during vcr.

Escort target is the target you can set in client (and this of course
then the code choses when escorting during vcr)

Movement target is the target the host choses for the object to fly
towards during vcr.
Firing targets are the targets at which the objects fire during vcr.
They are also code chosen.

Of course both can be influenced by the player via the attack
switches. A client side given kill target will put the corresponding
target in vcr on top of movement and firing target list. so that the
corresponding object will first move and fire at this kill target
before it deals with other targets in vcr.

Firing Targets as Movement Targets:

Firing target are target that are more in range of the weapons while
movement targets are the target where the object really wants to go
to. For example if enemy wing zipping around your Gorbie while the
gorbie is set to attack dangerous the the wings will appear in the
firing target list while the big enemy Cube which is currently out of
range of the Gorbie's weapons.

So if the the Gorbie is escorted by own wings you can tell the wings:
Fly towards the target at which the Gorbie is currently firing. This
are often the targets which are attacking the Gorbie. So then the
Gorbie's wings will help him.

"Combat firing target" syncronizes the firing targets for the weapons
between the escorted and the escorts
"Combat movement targets" does the same for the movement targets. So
the escorted and the escorts fly towards the same targets.

Better now?

its a lilk more clear.

so if im correct there is now way we can influence the movement target
to be that of what we are escorting? im sure theres cases where i
would have an escort mission for lets say valuable transport cargo on
a large frieghter (the escorts are expendable but the frieghter is
not). i dont want the escorts to fly off chasing targets within the
VCR leaving the frieghter open for enemy ships to clobber. and since
the frieghter has no weapons, it cant possibly have a firing target.
so id love it if we could influence escorting vessels to move towards
the frieghter as the movement target to provide screening defenses for
it.

Oh, you have all the flexibility you need:

1) Form a fleet. Set no special sources for movement and target. The
the escorts will zip around the freighter.
2) Set the freighter to flee and let the escorts move towards the
"weapon" targets of the frieghter. These should in anyway the targets
which are close to the frieghter. Your escorts then move towards these
target while the frieghter tries to flee from them. Forming a fleet to
accomplish this is not needed.

You can also set the escorts to "hold the line" and they will never go
away from the freighter.

But then you have set up the group as fleet in the fleet menu.
