I plan to buy the new "Nikopol (something) of the Immortals" after
playing the demo. Very impressed.
I'm back into these games because I miss good stories, solving puzzles
(even if they are too obscure and difficult) and voice actors. I miss
this stuff! I also need a break from all the action gaming I do.
I also want to get The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. Then the Syberia
series.
I never played Myst series. At that time in my life I was heavily into
action games.
Should I pickup the Myst series? Or is it graphically outdated to
enjoy compared to the games listed above?
Any other adventure games out there that are fairly recent??
Thanks! |

The promo stuff I saw on the publisher's web site (Got Game) looked
good. I'll get it at some point.

Myst *does* look dated, graphically, but that doesn't mean you won't
enjoy it. It was always a game of atmosphere, puzzle, and setting --
the story is more implied than real, but it's still engaging.
The rest of the Myst series advances in step with the times. (RealMyst
is a 3D updated version of Myst, which was okay-looking in 2000 but is
crude compared to modern 3D games, including Myst 5.)
> Any other adventure games out there that are fairly recent??
Lots. My review list is posted at http://eblong.com/zarf/gamerev/ .
I particularly liked the Dark Fall series (ghost-story horror), Rhem
(wall-to-wall puzzles, no story), Return to Mysterious Island,
Overclocked, the current Sherlock Holmes series (Awakened and
Nemesis).

Those 3 games are all good. At least I thought so.

The only Myst game I liked was Myst Exile though you might like the others.

I'm playing Dracula Origin right now which is OK and before that, I played
Sherlock Holmes Nemesis which I liked better. Both are well done games IMO
with good graphics and good acting.

Just finished playing Origin which , as you say, is `OK`. Just started
playing Dracula 3 which, from
first glance, I`ll enjoy more.

Not sure if I`ve played this one - played a few of the other Sherlock Holmes
games, and now
I`ve splashed out on a new laptop I`m be able to play more of the newer
games and not have
to see if they will work on win98:-)

Well, at least you have upgraded some :>) I don't know if newer games will
play on Win 98. I had to use Win XP partition for Sherlock Holmes Nemesis
and Dracula Origin. Didn't you get Win XP installed on your new laptop.? The
ones they sell here all have Vista. They had Win XP which you could get
installed with the laptop not long ago, but now you can't seem to get Win XP
installed at all. They all come installed with Vista. I had been thinking of
a laptop, and could tolerate Vista if I had to, but what bothers me more is
the glossy screens which all laptops have now. I like anti glare screens
better, or matte which is same as my LCD monitor, and they used to have them
but when I've looked around in the last few months, none of them have anti
glare now. I get migraine headaches from glossy screen on laptops.

I noticed the other day, RealMyst is one you can currently play
for free on Gametap.
http://www.gametap.com/play/gameDetails/000184150
(Not that I ever have, because you have to download the client
thingamajig, and possibly have to live in a specific country ...)

Gametap has a decent stock of old adventure games (Myst 3, the new
Sam&Max series, Schizm 2, Psychonauts, The Last Express, Voyage,
Mysterious Island, Penumbra, Dark Fall, Aura, Sentinel -- and a bunch
of the Infocom text adventures, which of course I recommend.
If you're in the mood to play as many of those games as you can in a
row, it may be worth signing up for Gametap for a few months. You can
unsubscribe (well, suspend your paid subscription) at any time. But it
is true that it's only available in the US and Canada.
(Gametap was just bought by some European gaming service, so they may
expand to other countries at some point, but this is not yet a
reality.)

I don't see anything about it being available in Canada. I only found:
"Unless otherwise specified, the materials in the GameTap Web sites are
presented solely for the purpose of entertainment and promoting programs,
events, products, and services available in the United States, its
territories, possessions, and protectorates."
The usual story - your next door neighbours are left out :p

Go to <http://support.gametap.com/> and search the knowledge base for
"international".
(When they say "gold accounts" and "green accounts", they mean paid
subscriptions and unpaid ones. You can sign up for free in several
non-North-America countries, but the free accounts only get a small
subset of the games.)

So what do you get for green accounts which are unpaid accounts, and whata
do you get for gold and green ? there is a link to what you get for green
and gold and just green, but I couldn't figure it out. What features are
only available for US people as it says in the copy and paste paragraph I
sent in my last message? Can you download and play some of the games you
mentioned before from gametap? do they sell games too?

If you browse through the site, you will see lists of "free games" and
"premium games". The premium ones (the majority) are the ones you need
a gold account for. I was naming adventure games from the premium
list, although it looks like Psychonauts and RealMyst are currently on
the free list. (I think they rotate the freebies.)

I cannot help you with out-of-date copyright messages. The support
page says gold is available in the US and Canada. If that turns out to
be false, you'll have to yell at them.
> Can you download and play some of the games you
> mentioned before from gametap?
That's how the system works. You download a client program, and that
then lets you browse their catalog and play games.
It's effectively a rental system: the games you select only work
inside the Gametap client, and if you switch to a "green"
subscription, the premium games stop working. But like I said, if you
want to play several adventure games in a row, it's a good deal.
> do they sell games too?
There are a few games listed as "retail" on the site. I don't know how
that works -- I never tried it.

Thanks for the information Andrew. I found it hard to find things on that
site and not very organized - IMO. I guess its ok once you get to know the
site.

Holmes Nemesis?
I agree, yeah. I just finished Dracula Origin. I don't think I'll be
writing a full review (or even a mini-review , but the game felt
shorter and less interesting than either of Frogwares' Holmes games.

I hear you can get it from some vendors. My PC was bought in 2003,
though, so I'm hoping Vista will never be my problem.

Yes, should be Sherlock Holmes Nemesis. I must have too much Dracula :>)

I haven't finished Dracula Origin yet. I started it right after I finished
Nemesis. Nemesis held my interest a lot more than Origin, maybe because
Nemesis was more of a detective story and I liked going to the various areas
in London, Buckingham palace, Tower of London, etc. Also, I liked the acting
and accents of Holmes and Watson. Didn't care as much for Lestrade. he
sounded like an American trying to talk with an English accent. But Origin
is OK in its own way.

You used to be able to get Win XP on a few laptop models from Dell online
for a custom made laptop, but they don't seem to have any Win XP laptops
more. I don't think anybody has it now. Same with anti glare screens. I
don't see any of them any more either. My PC was bought in 2004. I think its
a over 4 years old now. I can still play newer games in Win XP, but as I
said before, my video card is lagging behind. I haven't done any more about
getting another one. I don't know how long a new video card would extend the
life of my present system or maybe I should just wait and update my systen,
though that won't be for a while.

Every time somebody mentions Nemesis here I think they mean Zork
Nemesis. We need a petition against new "Nemesis" games. |
