I played "Keepsake" which I liked a lot from a couple of years ago. This
year I've played "Sherlock Holmes, Nemesis "and "Dracula Origin". Also "And
Then there were None and am now playing "Evil Under the Sun" both of these
are detective type games based on Agatha Christie books. They are adventure
games -no action or combat. They were all quite good IMO. But you might want
to look at reviews.

Mary, I have played both games via BigFishGames at a cost of less than
$7 each and now, seeing them in the stores, wonder if the retail,
boxed game is different from the BFG download. It seems that wherever
I look for new graphic adventure games nowadays, I see shelves mostly
filled with the download titles of games I have played for 1/3rd th
cost. Is there a difference in the game depending on the source? Does
anyone know?Thanks.

I paid $13.50 for Evil under the Sun (with box) at Staples a couple of weeks
ago. It was half price. I don't often see fairly newish games at Staples,
but now and then I do. I have never downloaded any games. Some download
games companies do not allow you to copy the game to a DVD and I sometimes
replay games. Also, I like having the disc. But its always been the case
that many games which are older are 1/3 rd of the cost or less. I saw a set
recently for Keepsake, Secret Files of Tunguska and Mysterious island for
$19.99.But by the time a pack comes out, most people have played them and
paid for them individually. As far as difference in downloading and buying
in the store, I think it would be the same as far as playing the game, but
by downloading, you may not be able to copy it to a DVD and have to get it
from the company who has it for download, and if they go out of business at
a later time and you want to reply the game.... Well...

I doubt it. BigFishGames offers big discounts on all of their catalog
if you promise to buy several games. Seems to be their business model.

The Sherlock Holmes game and Dracula: Origin are from Frogware. Lately
they have been developing quite decent adventure titles, including the
earlier Sherlock Holmes titles - Awakened and also case of Silver
Earrings.
I'd recommend keeping an eye on any adventure title coming from this
French developer.

Are Holmes Nemesis and Dracula Origin the only games so far made by
Frogware? I played Silver Earring, which was just OK. I didn't play
Awakened. It was a higher price than usual for other adventure games.
Probably because it was not made by The Adventure company. I only saw it in
a couple of Staples stores. Dracula Origin and Sherlock Holmes Nemesis were
19.99 Can.$ made by Adventure company. Most of their games are that price
here in Toronto. Evil Under the sun was $29.99 not made by TAC, but I got it
half price. If it hadnt been for TAC publishing a lot of games in the last
few years, we wouldn't have had as many adventure games to play. Even
though some of them were not too great. A lot of them were quite good. But
there were a few other games published by others which I liked, Dreamfall
for one.
I am near the end of Evil under the Sun. I liked it. A lot of wandering
around. Should have had a map. I sometimes checked the walkthrough to find
out where to go next or you could go to several places and nothing to do.
There's a lot of interaction with people and trying to get information from
them and you have to think. The acting is pretty good but if you are looking
for a game with a lot of puzzles there ae not many. I like Hercule Poirot's
French accent. I like all French accents. The English accents in the game
sound authentic. Now I will have no games to play till something else turns
up I might like. What is happening on Jane Jensens new game?. I haven't been
checking game sites for a while.

Adventure Company are just publishing the games. Frogware are the
developers. Besides the four games already mentioned, I think they
developed "80 Days" as well. There might be more.

Rumour has it the game will be out around June 2009. If you haven't already
seen it there is a Gray Matter short story by Jane Jensen recently made
available:
http://blog.graymatter-game.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/twas-the-ni...-before
Twas the Night Before
By Jane Jensen
Intro: Between Gabriel Knight #1 and #2, I wrote a short fictional piece for
Sierra’s magazine called Pause that gave players an idea of what the
characters were doing between the time frame of the two games. While
thinking of a worthy December blog entry, the idea came to mind to write a
short story about the characters but I dismissed it at first. Too much
work, not enough time. But the idea wouldn’t go away. So here it is. This
is the Christmas ‘before’ and Dread Hill House and David lie somewhere ahead
in Sam’s future. |

Thanks for the link MetalGuru. Jane can certainly tell a good story. I hope
her "Gray Matter" game will be good.

Yes, Adventure company are just the publishers, however, the game is made
first, then needs a publisher before it can be marketed and sold in stores.
A game developer may need to try a few different publishers before he gets
one to publish his/her game (same as an author of a book) but a publisher
usually has several game developers wanting them to publish.

Mystery of the Mummy, Journey to the Center of the Earth, 80 Days.
(But not Return to Mysterious Island or Voyage, which are the Jules
Verne adaptions from the *other* French adventure game studio.)
I only played JttCotE. It was really bad. I'm glad that Frogwares has
improved.
