Archived from groups: alt>games>warcraft (more info?)

Based on comments and suggestions of others, I have started a (very)
modest Solo page for WoW Players who like to wander The Barrens or
Westfall (or anywhere else in Azeroth, for that matter) alone:

http://www.firish.com/WoW/Solo

Nothing special; no frills, no banners, no ads, etc. Hopefully it
will end up being a nice collection of tips and articles to help us
out. Right now it is in a very primitive state.

I've already 'borrowed' a post from Catronia R so if you don't want
your words and/or accreditation there, let me know!

I will gladly accept (an indeed, am looking for) contributions from
others but know in advance this is a non-profit endeavor; thus you
will be donating your musings for fame only.

Send your Soloing Brilliances to dickjarvinen RemoveThis @hotmail.com; I'm looking
for tips, stories, advice, whatever you think will help a soloist.

Ah, thanks! But now, of course, I am expecting a full dissertation
on the pros and con of each class, what weapons they should carry,
and whether Gnomes should be part of their diet.

I disagree. Paladin soloes very well. In my experience, Mage does not
solo well at all (and I managed, by much painful grinding, to get a
Gnome Mage to level 20.

My top 3 list would contain Hunter, Warlock and Paladin.

Priest soloes tolerably, but no more. Warrior works, but not well at
all. I haven't seriously played any other classes (although I have tried).

I must say I can do at least 4 maybe not 5 of my lvl. I solo'd the
elite in alterec ruins the other day and managed to take out a lvl 38
mage also. I put my pet on the elite and i did melee with him for the
most part. when the other mage poped up i stood back and burned him
down with my bow. I was a lvl 35 at the time.

Had i know the hunther was this nice to play i'd rolled a hunter
instead of a paladin or warlock.

Different classes suit different players. I find Paladins VERY slow to
level compared to Mages. Paladins are much SAFER, for sure. Hedgehog
build for paladin is the only way I level one, but there is still the
trouble with pulling.

My Gnome Mage kept dying. It was totally painful to solo quest with him.

Later on I tried playing a Blood Elf Mage for a while, but she wasn't
fun at all. IIRC she's 8th level or so. At least I got the Gnome up to
20th, but that was a total pain in the rear end, and I only managed to
ding 20 because I wanted him to provide alchemical services for my other
characters.

Which spec did you take on your gnome mage? The very first character
I started was a troll mage while I was on the trial version. Went
arcane spec. Only made it up to around 16 or 18 before I moved
servers to be with my friends. When I go around to working on a mage
again, (after playing a rogue and a priest for a bit) I went frost
spec and found it easier. It can get a bit boring if you're just
fighting single mobs. FB,FB,FB,FNova, run/blink away, FB,FB and
they're probably dead. Repeat ad'nauseum. Once you can AoE grind
mobs it becomes more fun, trying to AoE grind mobs that aren't really
suitable for it. ; )

What might be interesting would be to see if there's an order in which
to play the classes that would work best. Sort of like, if you play a
hunter first, then you should play a warlock next, as the similarities
with dealing with a pet/minion make it an easier transition, then once
you've played the warlock a bit, maybe taken up drain tanking, then
the next might be a shaman, as you're used to casting spells while
being in the mobs face from drain tanking. Then maybe a rogue next,
etc.

I don't know. With polymorph, frost nova, and blink, you shouldn't be
dying very often, and you can kill things faster than any other class.

Tell me about it. My mage was my BANK ALT. I took him out of Org to
level so he could up his enchanting. He's now my main (and only L70).

I've leveled 2 warlocks, one to 68 and one to 70. I've also leveled a
paladin to 22, a druid to 26, a hunter to 20, and a mage to 16.

Levels 1-10 are a tie between the warlock and the paladin. Warlocks
put out more damage than the paladin, and get their first minion at 2,
unlike the hunter who has to struggle a bit through the first 10
levels. Paladins with their mail armor and ability to heal themselves
make it through the first 10 levels unscratched. For druids, level
1-10 corpse runs should award XP. And I wasn't too impressed with the
mage.

10-20 starts to become dependent on the chosen spec. My hunter went
BM spec, and was ridiculously easy to level to 20. My first warlock
was my first character, and I had no idea what I was doing, and went
destro from the beginning. My second warlock was after gaining a lot
of experience, and went affliction from the beginning. By level 20 a
warlock can have all the base skills he needs for drain tanking.
Paladin was still fairly easy at these levels, but fell behind the
warlock and hunter. Druid got better from 10-16, but started to fall
behind again as I approached 20. Mage I was still unimpressed with
and this is where he has languished for quite some time.

20-30 with my 1st warlock was more newbishness with destro and
learning to carry large stacks of water with me. My 2nd lock spent
more points developing his drain tanking and dots. Paladin hit 22, my
goal, and specced into ret for the run speed buff, then retired to
Silvermoon as my full time bank alt. Hunter I stopped at 20. Druid I
have gotten to 26, almost 27. Switching from the durability of bear
form to the fragile DPSing ability of cat form was a bit difficult,
especially in the earlier 20's where I didn't have many cat form
abilities. At 26, its become much easier, stealth and DPS of a rouge
combined with a few healing abilities makes it simple to continue
questing, so long as you don't shift out to heal, cast a heal and find
you don't have enough mana to shift back.

Warlocks are my only 30+ experience. My destro lock continued down
the destro path. By the time I realized how much easier affliction
would have been, I decided I didn't feel like learning a whole new
play style and just stuck with it till 68, at which point I switched
to a PvP server and started my 2nd lock. My second lock stayed
affliction till 68, then went demo for a bit to try something new.
After that, went SM/Ruin for a while, then recently to SL/SL. I liked
SM/Ruin a lot. SL/SL is nice in that you can reconfigure yourself for
the situation based on what pet you have. You're more durable with
increased stamina and soul link. The downside is the dependency on
the pet. For me to match my DPS from SM/Ruin, I need to have my
succubus out, and she gets killed easily. I can get the imp out,
which gives me reduced threat and more stamina, but also nerfs my
damage output a bit. Works great in BG's though.

I can say this though, a demo warlock specced into the felguard
becomes almost like a BM hunter by 56. A pet that can both tank (and
tank well) and do DPS gives the warlock BM hunter like abilities. I
soloed quite a few unfearable Outland elites with a felguard spec.
Before level 56 an affliction warlock has the advantage of high power
dots and elite mobs that can be feared, I soloed quite a few Azeroth
elites with that spec. A destro lock can do much of the same, but
needs constant reapplication of fear as all the DD spells will tend to
break fear.

She has made them, and they are waiting for her to hit high enough

At level 70, this is the same situation for me. I shoot 1 fireball at
near max range, then start on another. I will ALWAYS get at least 2
off before they get to me. As the second fireball hits I hit them
with a fire blast and with those 3 hits 90% of regular mobs are dead
well before they get to me (and it could only take the 2 fireballs if
I get crits, which fire tree actually has a lot of crit boosting
stuff. I don't focus on crit stats at all and with my Molten Armor up
I am at 30% crit rate on fire spells (21% on all spells).

Only thing I stop for when soloing my mage is to drink. Otherwise she
just burns through everything. I actually leveled from 60-70 as frost
(and raided for about 2 months as frost), before switching to fire,
and I have to say that Fire has much less downtime than Frost for me.

Hmm, 1-30 only is an interesting one, as some characters don't get their
best abilities early on.

1. Warlock
2. Rogue
3. Hunter
4. Shaman
5. Mage

But really others come into their own later on - I've never levelled a
shaman far so don't know them well but my lvl 20 one has been fun so far
(if too squishy, but then I am wearing cloth), paladins are fantastic at
higher levels (40+) when specced prot... I've not levelled a druid beyond

1-70 based on my experience so far (so no real test on
shaman/druid/warrior)
1. Warlock
2. Hunter
3. Priest
4. Paladin
5. Rogue

Yes it might seem strange having priest so high up when I've only played
holy priests, but for me they work great, very easy to play, great
survivability and very fun. Paladin would be 3rd but for the torture of
getting through the low levels until you can respec prot (plus I've not
done Outland on mine yet), Rogue I wish could be higher but it's just too
gear dependent at certain level ranges - 55-60 was painful until I got
decked out in azeroth blues, 65-70 was painful until I got full Outland
blues. The rest of the time it's a fantastic class but those level ranges
really hurt for me :-/

Warlock over hunter, simply because it's more interesting, both are equally
easy for me, but warlocks are also really really fun to play, while I found
the hunter got a bit boring after a while. Both can complete elite quests
solo that other classes couldn't, both can grind very easily with no
downtime, both can kill fast but warlock has the edge for me.
