All this fooling around with Privateer Remake and Privateer Gemini Gold
reawakened an interest in Wing Commander.....so I thought I'd replay the
original games.

Well, Kilrathi Saga doesn't really work all that well on XP and I wanted the
original experience anyway so I got out my original DOS versions to play
them via DosBox.

No problem with WC2 and its expansions because I'd backed them up on 3.5
diskettes.....which were still good after 15 years!

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, I can only find my original 5.25
diskettes for the first Wing Commander and Special Missions and Special
Missions 2. Here's the rub: my last 5.25 drive died just as I was starting
to transfer the data.

Fortunately, I had another copy of Wing Commander on an old Origin gamepack
CD, so I was able to install that one. Unfortunately, I have no other
copies of the two expansions. The local PC shop wants $99 to try to copy
over the 2 megs of data from the Special Missions diskettes (using a 5.25
drive on one their pc's). If the diskettes turn out to be unreadable, too
bad.

I've searched the web and, while you can download the original Wing
Commander from several places, the DOS Special Missions and Special Missions
2 expansions are not to be found anywhere.

Does anyone know of a source for these two expansions? Any info will be
greatly appreciated and will make an old gamer happy.

Hey, I have a CD here entitled WingCommanderII Deluxe Edition
published by Origin, other printing on the CD is VDistronics Technologies
5386 Made in Australia. I haven't got a clue if this is related to what you are
looking at/for, since I never managed to get this thing to go. However, if I
want to play spacies I will get [back] to X3 so this thing is up for grabs.

I'll put it to one side here, and if you can tell me what to look for on the CD
I will happily do so.

cheers, -Peter

I'm looking for the two DOS expansions, Secret Missions and Secret Missions
2, for the first Wing Commander game. I'm OK for WC2 and its expansions,
which is what it sounds like you have. However, thanks very much for
looking.

PROBLEM SOLVED! Found another, working 5.25 floppy drive on a dead 486 in
my garage (the "pc graveyard"), which I installed in an old P3.

Second miracle of the day: the 15-year old WC Deluxe Edition floppies were
still readable. I quickly copied them all to the HD, then copied them off
onto 3.5 floppies, transferred them to my main pc........and successfully
installed SM and SM2. SM/SM2 both run fine.

There's a lesson here somewhere, that's for sure. Henceforth, all my WC
stuff is going to be stored in multiple accessible places (portable HD,
floppies, CD's) and I'll make sure to upgrade media storage as old types
become obsolete. I think the 3.5 floppies are already pretty much obsolete
and I guess the CD's will be next.

Yeah, my floppy drive has been broken for a year now and I haven't missed it
once. I'm up to burning double layer DVDs now for backups ... and it's only a
question of time until _they_ will be obsolete.

One good reason to keep old hardware about, much to my wife's chagrin who just
wants to biff everything - until she wants something which I pull out of my box
of tricks, then she's impressed for about 5 minutes until she wants to biff
everything again <sigh>. That wanting to chuck my stuff out seems to have
something of the inevitability of [dog meets lamppost] about it.

-P.

About 6 months ago, my wife brought it to my attention that the city was
collecting old pc's and monitors free for a two day period. She urged me to
get rid of all those old pc's at the rear of the garage. I almost did
it.....but something held me back. That was a close call. If I'd gotten
rid of the old stuff, I wouldn't have been able to do what I did today.

This was one of those posts that made me think "this guy is living my
life". Particularly the bit about her being impressed for about five
minutes - I've done that so many times now I can tell exactly when
it's going to wear off and be replaced by the old "so when are you
getting rid of that then".
