after a few weeks of waiting and getting angry at the seller, my
vectrex has finally arrived today...
while i am happy that its here now, i am also a little bit
disappointed, for i noticed a few weird things...
the display seems to be "disaligned"...
* while starting up, the square lines on the welcome screen are
strange, it doesnt look like a square inside a square, but more like
one square sitting diagonally shifted on the other one..
* the fonts are distorted, the horizontal lines are not horizontal, but
also diagonally shifted. well, most of them, some of them seem to be
fine.
* the player ship is acting weird, sometimes its "teleporting around" a
few millimeters on the screen. generally objects are jumping around
sometimes. no steady flow on the screen.
* the enemy objects are most of the time a little bit off, especially
the start of the vectorlist doesnt seem to connect to the end. this
doesnt happen with all objects though, so i wonder whats causing this..
* the worst thing i have observed until now is the starting scene with
the big mineship going downwards on the screen. well, it has been
around 23 years since i played minestorm on a real vectrex in a
department store, but i dont remember the big mine ship looking like a
pan of scrambled eggs...really completely unrecognisable...
can somebody tell me what this effect causes (yoke?), and if it is
possible to get it repaired by a specialist..
thanks a lot for any comments and advices...

hey thanks, thats some good points to start with...
i think i will also check out the test cartridge, after cleaning the
dust out.
fortunately a friend of mine is a tv technician, so i guess i have good
chances to get it repaired, but i have to tell the guy what to do after
all... |

I'd recommend installing a cap kit and going over all the header pin
connections while the monitor chassis is out with fresh solder.
I collect arcade games and cap kits do wonders for the most screwed up
displays that installing them has gotten to be standard operating
procedure for me if there is the slightest issue with the display.
I believe Zanen sells a cap kit for the Vectrex.

What your Vectrex is doing sounds like a more severe version of what
mine is starting to do.
An easy thing to try is opening up your Vectrex and giving it a blow
with canned air or a compressor, get rid of the layers of dust on the
circuits and chips. About 13 years ago I started up my Vectrex and the
screen was a total mess, so my dad opened up the case and the thing was
literally caked in dust. Once everything was cleared out it worked
perfectly. Give it a try at least.
Im no Vectrex expert but you could be looking at something like dry
capacitors. I have read about some machines needing to be re-capped but
I dont know too much about that sorry.

Bad form to reply to myself I know but the vectrex troubleshooting guide
has some good information ( http://www.vectrex.nl/docs/vecguid.pdf ),
from what it looks like could be a yoke problem, giving the whole area a
clean might be all you need though. Just dont touch anything unless you
know what your doing, I assume you do know but I will just say that for
safety.

Do you still get sound ?
Are there dots on the screen ?
It might be worth a try replacing the 6522

Yes I do. The vectrex is OLD. It has components that have surpassed their
expected lifespan. Did you open it up and probe it? Probably not. Send
me your vectrex, I'll pay shipping (unless you're in Europe, then forget it) |

hi there richard,
well, the sound is okay, the problem is that the vectors on the screen
are jumping around , and generally dont connect well...especially in
scramble this looks awful...hmm...next weekend i will get my veccie and
the technicians manual to a tv tech friend of mine, he might know what
to do...
