Stop laughing. Please...

I have an old machine (fine for games I play ATM) running Windows '95
OSR2+USB which has USB (1x) hardware in and working - I've been
able to use a USB mouse.

Unfortunately my ancient game port joystick has finally died after over
10 years... does anybody know of lower end USB joysticks that would
work under '95?
2-axis 2-button would do, extra pair of buttons or a hat would be nice.

The ones in Game all wanted '98 according to the box, and even though
the assistant agreed that was probably just to avoid confusion, they
still weren't willing to take it back if it didn't work... Sad

I'll try a couple of independent shops, but in the meantime any
suggestions that don't involve "drivers" from some strange website or a
complete W98 re-install of the machine would be welcome...

Thanks

Henry

No, I don't know of any. I had all sorts of problems getting USB joypads to
work on a 98 machine, so I can only predict it'd be even worse with a 95
machine.

The main problem with 98 was not so much getting the controller recognised by
Windows, but more getting it recognised by the game. Games that run on
Windows 95 tend to access the gameport directly rather than through
DirectInput, and so a USB controller appears not to exist to the game.

I'd recommend trying car boot sales or independent shop bargain bins for an
old gameport one.

Yes, they exist, I have one.

I'm pretty sure my USB Playstation pad adapter wasn't recognised as a
HID until Win ME, although that may just have been 16-button HID in
particular. Before then I had to rely on the (very) dodgy drivers that
came with the thing on 95/98SE, not that any of that helps you overly much.
