Hi folks,
I just read about "Trials of Newcastle" and it sounded really interesting. I
went to the site and downloaded at least 19 files which are supposed to be
required for play, most of them 'hak' files. Now I've played dozens of NWN
mods, but this is my first try at a Persistent World and I'm very confused
at the start. How do you play it without a 'mod' file? There is an IP
address which I'm guessing is the key, but I don't know where/how to enter
it! I tried the usual NWN interface, and even typing the IP into my browser
with no luck, but I still have no idea how to actually get into the game
(onto the server?).
I feel terribly dense having to ask for help with something like this, it's
probably SO simple...
Anyway, hoping to hear some advice soon, and thanks in advance!

So I'll make you feel better and ask even a dumber question...is this
online play only like WoW or is it like the later NWN official mods
(Kingmaker etc) that you needed to be logged on to play? See, at least
you're one step ahead of me! |

Hi Katy,
I'm really not sure (since I haven't even been able to get started) but I
think you need to be logged in.

Hi guys
To play you need to download the required hak files - all listed on
the forums, and then log in at the "direct connect" IP listed.
Alternatively you can find it listed under Role Play on Gamespy.
If you join the forums at the link you can get help from regular
players on how to get into the game. It is a persistent world - so
whilst you need to log in to play and adventure (it has over 65 quests
and a strong story/plot) - what you achieve will be remembered by the
game and saved as you go along. |

After pressing 'Multiplayer' you need to find the 'Direct Connect'
button, and just place the IP in the space provided. |

Hi ACNTONDM,
Thanks for your reply, but I'm still confused. I have already downloaded and
installed all the required hak files, but how *exactly* do I "log in"? I
know what the IP is, but I still don't understand where/how to activate it!
I'm feeling dumber by the minute, this is probably SO easy but it just
eludes me. Do you start up the NWN interface like you were going to play a
mod? Do I need to have my browser open and type the IP in manually? (I've
tried both with no luck.)

hmmmm....maybe I'll go scouting around on the BioWare forums and see
what's going on with that....I liked Kingmaker a lot... |

Ah*Haaa*!
Thank you, I never used the Multiplayer button before, so it never even
occurred to me!
I will try it soon, and thanks again for being patient with me!
There is just so much info to read about this, I have one last question:
If I don't want to join/form a party, I don't have to, do I? (I prefer
solo.)

Ok, I'm making progress! was able to get as far as Character Creation, but
when I click 'play' I'm told that I'm missing 3 HAKs!
I thought I was being so careful downloading each one, but it seems like
I've still missed something somewhere.
Here are the 3 files I'm missing, can anyone tell me where to find them?
sf_maintileset.hak
sf_ddstextures2.hak
sf_ddstextures1.hak
(I've double-checked everything listed on the main page.)
Thanks in advance, I'm so close to being able to play! aaaarghh <g>

Well, it was fun while it lasted...
After finding my 3 missing haks (thanks again ACNTONDM for providing a link)
I was finally able to actually start the game!
I walked around a little bit, read tons of stuff that I didn't quite
understand, talked to a few npcs, bought a longsword & shield, and then
crashed. Repeatedly. After trying 6 or 7 times, I just took it as sign that
this was not the game for me - or my aging system. Oh well, onwards to the
Hall Of Fame for a new mod! <g>
Thanks everyone for trying to help,

As you mentioned it, I checked and played this afternoon with the internet
cable unplugged. The game loaded just fine. As you say, maybe play in an
Administrator account though why that should affect the game exe so you have
to sign in to an external host I don't know.
Best wishes
