Picked up SotS Collectors Edition at Walmart on a whim and have found I am
pleasantly surprised. It's another 4X space strat game like MOO and it is
done quite well. Best of all it doesn't have a 20 level deep GUI like MOO3
and is easy to learn. It completely went under my radar when it was
released. If you are looking for a decent 4X space strat game that is light
on the wallet then check it out.

Yep, it's a good little game, though they haven't solved the endgame-micro
problem which blights all space 4X. I particularly like the rotatable map -
it's a "true" 3D galaxy but you can flatten it and play in 2D if you're like
me and true 3D fries your brain. Once you flatten it, it looks a lot like
MoO1, the best of the MoOs.
The expansion (Born of Blood) is great and adds a whole new race and other
stuff, and I hear there's a second add-on in the works too.

2nd expansion is called "A Murder of Crows", comes with a new race,
more techs, espoinage, etc, and has been released digitally at Gamers
Gate already. Boxes show up at stores sometime later this month I
think. |

You don't actually make the map 2D, you pick the 2D map setting in the
galaxy set up. You wind up with a flat disc, not to be confused with
the disc shaped map.
Warning on the 2d map though is that it sometimes screws the humans
due to node line pathways. |

The collectors edition I bought includes Born of Blood expansion. I didn't
see the option to make the map 2D but will look for it next time I run it. |

The second expansion (A Murder of Crows) is out:
http://www.gamersgate.com/?page=product&what=view&sku=DD-SOTS-AMOC
I bought the Collector's Edition as well, and kinda regret getting
that one since it has dispensed with a paper manual in favour of a
second rate scifi novelette.
Ah well.

OK, thanks. I have no issues with the 3D map so will just stick with that.
The GUI in this game is much easier to get around than in SEV that's for
sure and MOO3 had about the worst GUI I have ever seen in a game. SotS uses
tabs which is a smart design choice nd I wish more games used tabs instead
of buring everything 2 - 4 layers deep. |

So what's the combat actually like now? I played the demo for this game
ages ago, and I totally choked on the combat system. Couldn't see the
enemy, couldn't target, ships would not respond to commands issued, and
all I got to do was to watch my ships die .... that was a total turn-off
for me and I didn't consider the game for purchase.
Is there, for instance, an auto combat option, or an option to turn
combat off and resolve a'la rfts 1?

I only played one combat so far and that was just while running the
tutorial. I had no problems with it and there is a walthrough video that
comes wuth the game that shows you how to do it correctly. It has
walthrough videos for all aspects of the game. There is auto-combat mode
too though so you don't hgave to play them unless you want to. |

Ah, thanks, good to hear. I'll keep an open mind then w.r.t. acquiring
the game at some point.
I'd love to see more review and opinion once you get further into it as
well

I browsed the novel; looks like the usual fanfic drivel. I would have
preferred to have this as pdf and in return a paper manual to peruse
at my leisure.
Seems like a fun little game, though.

You actually read the novel? I doubt I ever will as I don't like cheap
science fiction books anyway. I don't find I need a manual with this game
because the video tutorials teach you everything you need to know. |

I gave my copy away to a friend just last night. He likes 2nd rate science
fiction. He thinks Stargate Atlantis is great which I think is shite. I
like science fiction but only the high brow stuff - H.G. Wells, Aldous
Huxley, Arthur C. Clarke, George Orwell etc. |
