I bought a used Philips series 1 Tivo w/out a manual. The remote was
broken, so I bought a new Direct TV remote which works.
The question: Is there a STOP button?...Not the Pause button, not the
Go to End button.
A STOP button that turns the unit off and allows the unit to continue
with the Record list like a VCR does?
I know it's annoying to advanced users, but I looked at the FAQ's but
still can't find an answer.
Thank you |

| OK.
Now, how do I put it into stand-by?
Thanks.

Not stupid at all; it is not intuitive.
The TiVo is always on, always recording something - the last 30 minutes
of whatever channel it was last on.

There is no stop button and there is no off. You can put it into "Stand-By"
but that does very little more than turning off the outputs. The unit is
still on with the disk spinning. |

The unit can ALWAYS continue with the record list, assuming you
don't tell it not to when it asks about changing the channel.
If you are playing a recording, it can be recording something else.
Off? What's that?

It's on one of the setup menues, but it is pointless. The Tivo does
not know when you're watching it and cannot 'wake up' to record. It's
designed to be on all the time (and will burn a couple bucks worth of
electricity every month). If you're going on extended vacation and
don't want to record, unplug it.
It is counter-intuitive at first, but the stop button really would have
no purpose. Either you are going to pause to go do something like get
up for a drink of water or do something different on the tivo (tivo
central). |

There's no off button. And if it's tuned to a channel that's different than
what's needed for the next recording it'll warn you a couple of minutes
beforehand, and then automatically change the channel.
As in, you're surfing channels and there's upcoming program set to record.
If you've used the remote within that past couple of minutes the Tivo
"knows" you're there. It'll pop up a message saying it needs to change
channels. If you're not actually "there" it'll simply switch as necessary
and continue recording. If you're there and you see the message you can
tell it not to change channels.
Now, here's where it gets interesting, if the upcoming recording is one
that's also rebroadcast later on the Tivo will attempt to reschedule and
record that one instead. If there's something else in that later timeframe
it won't change anything (so don't worry about that). But if you're on a
dual-tuner Tivo it makes it nearly automagic. Very handy.
So basically the Tivo stays "on" 24x7. And since a lot of programs are
shown again at later times it can use that overnight time to grab them.
This wouldn't work if it got turned off.

Why would you want this? What do you think you'll gain from it?

Exactly, you're either going to hit the Tivo button to go back to the menu
(twice to go to Now Playing), or you're going to hit "Live Tv" or "guide".
There's really no use for a stop button.

UltimateTV had a stop button. It would take you back to a menu where
you could immediately decide to delete or change save options on the
program or resume playing (possibly other options; I don't recall).
Because it was a menu, if you went idle then the screen saver would take
over (yes, TiVo, a screen saver is better than going to "live TV" when
the system is idle at a menu!).

Thanks for all the information.
I'm starting to like Tivo. |
