I was browsing back issues of pyramid for campaign ideas when I stumbled
over "whimsy" or "storypath" cards.
Now, seeing as how these are out of print and I'm broke, buying them is
pretty impossible so I decided to make my own on 4x6 cards cut in half.
A few notes on a card, a bunch of cards with said notes, shuffle and I'm
in business.
Mine are different from the original in that I'll use them myself when
the action lags. Pull out a card, insert random idea into the game and
Viola! Less boredom!
These include things like pickpockets targetting a PC to finding a
lottery ticket to being hassled by a telemarketer. I must have like 70
of these now and will include all friends and enemies of the player
characters on them as well as things like the phone bill arriving in the
mail. |

Know what? It's a GOOD idea.
Why don't we all contribute to make a loooong list of that?
We could even number them and then anyone of us could
write/print/whatever use his own.
If the number gets large, one could always resort to a 1d100 table, or
a computer random generator.

Would you share them with us?
We could, in turn, help you expand your idea!

4a. A stranger bumps into you and says "You're the only one who can
stop Smith!" and dies.
Another one:
9. You come across a police line. Apparently someone has just been
shot; upon closer investigation, you see the person who is shot is
wearing the same clothes as you are and even resembles you...

1. "It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly a shot rings out!"
2. You are standing around, when suddenly a blazing toilet seat from a
space station hits you. 100d6 damage. (I miss that show)
3. A large truck passes down the street outside your house and tears
down your telephone line. If you have dial-up, you immediately lose
your internet connection. Plus, of course, your phone service. The
truck driver is sorry and calls his boss. 1d2 for the boss to care
enough to call the phone company. 1d6 hours for the phone company to
respond. (Based on a true story)

4. A stranger bumps into you, thrusts a parcel into your hands, then
falls over dead. (A classic plot twist, used most famously in the
movie "The Maltese Falcon")
5. You catch a glimpse of your mortal enemy, but it looks like he hasn't
noticed you yet... or has he?
6. A passing vehicle stops. A passenger pokes her head out the window
and says that she absolutely *must* have the shirt you're wearing, right
now, money is no object.
7. Suddenly it's the next morning. What just happened to your
short-term memories?
8. A burly fellow nearby looks straight at you and demands you repeat
what you just said about his mother. Even if you're mute, he insists it
was you who just insulted her.

9. You are accosted by a highwayman that says “Stand and Deliver, your
money or your life!”
10. There is a shaking of the ground. It appears to be a minor
earthquake. Upon reaching the road, you discover a large crevasse with
something about 10 feet down.
11. You notice with the change in wind, that there are little spiders
apparently parasailing on long silk strands. There appear to be
thousands of them…
12. You hear a sharp cry, and the vehicle in which you are traveling
suddenly careens to the left and tumbles.

15. You are hurring down a dark alley with your friend right behind
you. You turn a corner and see a body slumped in a pool of blood. You
turn it over and look into the lifeless face of your friend.
Who (or what) IS that behind you?... |
