My Series3 HD can only transfer at about 15Mbps. It's ridiculously slow, and
I don't really buy any of the excuses that the Panglossian types offer up
(drive speed, encryption speed, etc.).
If I had a need to transfer many hours of programming, it'd be a couple orders
of magnitude faster to yank the drive, plug it into a PC, and read it
directly. |

Same machine here as well. I just added the ext WD drive for a large storage
buffer. But It's the same speed before the added drive. I hear you on
removing the drive. |

Just out of curiosity, do the s3's have built in ftp/http servers? About 1/2
do.... Luckily my s2dt's do (for anyone lurking that wants to try, details
on how to do it see http://www.xml.com/lpt/a/1644 ) Article only talks about
s1's and s2's... would be neat if it worked on s3's.....
At any rate, lets me FTP files over the wireless network while I am doing
other things (like going out, or sleeeping! <not at the same time>), to be
honest, makes it so easy, I don't really care about speed |

Except it's not stored as one file, and is encrypted, and putting in a
Windows machine will write a WIN signature to it and destroy for Tivo.

Sounds as if TiVo could benefit from a "standby" mode, wherein
it means to the machine that "I'm not interested in recording or
buffering anything right now." A mode which would revert to
record automatically should a user scheduled event occur;
unfinished transfers could then return to slow speed.
I'm presently using a Motorola DCT3416 recorder, from TW cable,
to record non-basic and premium HDTV channels. Nowhere near the
UI of the TiVo, but it does shut down/wake up between scheduled
recordings. As a matter of fact, the PCs are also configured to
auto-power-on/off for captures of OTA HDTV. This is a great
energy/heat saving, clearly reflected in the monthly utility
bill.
TiVo's driving desire to record things one has not specifically
asked for seems to be the underlying issue in file transfer
speed. I vaguely recall going to whatever extent to turn off
that "feature" when I had a first gen machine, mostly because
the ever growing, and relatively useless, thumbs down file was
eating up the small drive space available, and perhaps
contributing to sluggish search response times as well. Can't
recall whether I was completely successful? But I also never
tried transferring between TiVo and PC.
Even though the DCT3416 has firewire and is reported by some to
support real-time transfers to a PC or Mac, it's more convenient
to use the Hauppauge 1212 as the decrypting capture device,
since there is no flagging nor encryption which suppresses the
also real-time recording via the component interface. Using the
$10/mo HD-DVR, which includes the guide, in effect allows the
Hauppauge to capture two concurrent streams serially via its
otherwise single stream interface. |

I checked out that link, and I only see instructions for transferring
information about video files in XML. Did I miss something obvious or
did you mean to post a different link?
Also, within that link is a link to a book ad. In the first link, it
says the book applies to S1 and S2. The second link makes it very clear
that the S2 is a closed system.
Colour me disappointed, because my machine is an S2DT.

Now I'm really perplexed, have no clue why it uses the terms "hacks",
"hacking", and "xml", but in reality has nothing to with with them at all..
from that link (it's a sales for a book link, so they probably add uneeded
stuff so they get more keywords in a search).....Been using it with my
S2DT's for years, and just wonder if the s3 has a server thing built
in...... heres the first few lines from that link:
Before I describe how to do this, I'm making two assumptions:
*
Your TiVo is on your home network. As the TiVo documentation explains,
you just plug a network adapter into the USB port on the TiVo's back panel
and run a setup routine. Make sure that you get your network adapter from
someplace where you can return it if necessary, because the TiVo can be very
picky about these, sometimes accepting and rejecting different adapters of
the same make and model due to slight differences in the version number. I
found the website tivocards.com to be very helpful.
*
You're using one of the Series 2 TiVos that have been available for
over four years now. For information on great hacks that you can do with
both Series 2 and Series 1 TiVos, see the O'Reilly book TiVo Hacks.
To retrieve data from the HTTP server in your TiVo, you first need to find
out its IP address. From the TiVo main menu, pick Messages & Settings,
Settings, and then Phone & Network to display the Network Settings screen,
which will have your IP address. This number was dynamically assigned and
may change if you reboot some part of your home network, so don't hardwire
this IP address into your code when creating an application around it. The
same TiVo screen also shows your MAC ID (formerly the MAK, for Media Access
Key), which will be your password to gain access to the TiVo's metadata, so
note that as well.
Browsing the TiVo HTTP Server
Let's say that your TiVo's IP address is 192.168.2.103. To see its web
server's home page, point a browser on one of your home network's machines
to https://192.168.2.103. (Remember to make it https and not http, which
will give you a screen that tells you nothing about what you have on your
TiVo.) You may get a dialog box saying "Web Site Certified by an Unknown
Authority" and one saying "Domain Name Mismatch," and then you'll be
prompted for a username and password. Your username is "tivo", and your
password is the MAC ID that you copied from your TV screen when you got the
TiVo's IP address. The default web page redirects your browser to
https://192.168.2.103/nowplaying/index.html, which summarizes the shows you
have recorded:
For more details and screen examples, see that link...... |

Really? I was sure I could plug it in and Windows would read the drive just

There is no FTP server on my Series3, but there is a HTTP server. However,
the user "tivo", password [MAC address] does not work, with all variations on
entering the MAC (caps, lowercase, with and without colons). |

Sorry, I bad... I use Filezilla as my FTP program for several other
purposes, and have it set to use http instead of ftp for that one thing...
as for the Media access key (not the mac anymore with new software update),
doing it now.. Tivo button/messages and settings/account & system
information/media access key
shows me a number like 4884381336 and I use that as the
password....(depending on the software version, where to get the media
access key changed with the update a month or so ago)
Still don't know if it will work on an S3, and if you use tivo desktop, that
works anyway, just like being able to set long xfers to run while I am
sleeping (don't think tivo desktop lets you start a transfer at some future
time)... But hopefully now that you have the password info, you can maybe
give it a shot on your s3 and let me know if it works..... |

The media access key works as the password. It downloads at the same speed as
TiVo Desktop, however, and I'm pretty inclined to think that this is the
actual interface used by the program. |

I don't want to be cruel. My post above is dripping with sarcasm. I'm quite
well aware of the fact that the TiVo drive won't work as-is in Windows. There
are mfstools for Windows, but I'd almost certainly use a Linux box.
Current versions of Windows are unlikely to actually muck up the drive. I
know it doesn't mess with the MBR or boot sector of any non-Windows drive I've
plugged in in the past.
I do believe that older versions (i.e. the DOS-based ones, 95/98/Me) did have
a nasty habit of "initializing" unrecognized drives. |

I did a speed test today on a 3-hour movie.
It downloaded in 90 minutes.
This is almost exactly the same speed as with TiVo Desktop.
This is an SD movie, 4.82 GB in size, from my S2DT.
