Post subject: Sims Won't Install After Un-install
Archived from groups: alt>games>the-sims (more info?)

Ok, I bought the Sims Superstar yesterday from Target. I loved the Sims
and it worked great on my 933mhz PIII desktop computer. I installed the
Sims Superstar yesterday, and everything was fine until I got to the
main screen where they showed the neighborhoods. Once I clicked on a
house, it kinda froze, then it went into the house but the graphics
were COMPLETELY messed up.

I decided to un-install the Sims Superstar from the Add/Remove
programs. Bad choice. It deleted everything. I started to re-install it
this morning, but everything was messed up. It would freeze every time
I had to put CD2 from the Sims Deluxe Edition in. once it didn't
freeze, Messages would come popping up. I actually got it to 'finish'
(I saw the finish screen) and tried to install the Sims House Party. It
said I didn't have a valid version of The Sims installed. I have the
CDs and everything, so I'm not stealing it. I can send you a picture.
Razz

Anyway, I tried to un-install it from the Add/Remove programs and it
wouldn't do the un-installation and an error came up, even though I
tried two times.

I then deleted the Program Files/Maxis/The Sims & Sims Creator and
tried to re-install. When I tried to do that, the wrong type of
installation window came up. It didn't ask me for my product key.

The Sims Superstar has made me quite angry, and if anyone has
suggestions on just how to install all of my expansion packs up to The
Sims Superstar, I'd love it! I have:

The Sims Deluxe Edition
House Party
Hot Date
Unleashed

Thanks in advance!

First, you probably shouldn't use add/remove to uninstall The Sims or
manually delete the files. It deletes the game files but doesn't take
care of the registry settings that were changed. You should use
"Uninstall the Sims" from the start menu. That might be why you're
getting the error messages.

Second, according to the instructions with the MegaDeluxe package, you
have to install the expansion packs in the order they were released. In
my case, that was: Livin' Large, House Party, Hot Date.

If you still have "Uninstall the Sims" in your start menu, use that and
start again. If not, there are lots of free registry cleaning programs
that can delete entries that aren't linked to a file on your computer
(see Downloads.com) which may solve the reinstall problem.

If I remember this correctly, you have to use the sims registry cleaning
tool (found on the sims website) in order to completely remove the game
when uninstalling. Otherwise, it's not completely gone and will not
give you a clean reinstall. You could try that. But you should NEVER
delete folders within Program Files in order to get rid of the programs.
That's not how to uninstall at all and if you have already done that,
you might be in a world of hurt already. You can't reinstall while
there are still dregs of the sims on your hard drive.

I didn't know about that. It's better than a generic registry cleaning
program. I found the link: http://thesims.ea.com/us/getcool/utilities/

The page also gives the correct order for reinstalling the games: The
Sims, Living Large, House Party, Hot Date, Vacation, Unleashed,
Superstar and Makin' Magic.

Thanks for the tips. I re-formatted my hard drive and re-installed
Windows XP. I installed everything in the correct order, here's how I
installed them.

The Sims Deluxe
The Sims House Party
The Sims Hot Date
The Sims Unleashed
The Sims Superstar

I don't have Vacation so I didn't install that. I have attached a link
to a picture that shows what I get. All I did was just scroll for 3
seconds and this is what I came up with. I'm wondering if there's a
glitch in Superstar I could fix or if someone had any idea what is going
on here. This can't have anything to do with the registry since I have
re-formatted the hard drive. Any help is greatly appreciated!
