Trafton Cole and Eddie Haan started out as shoe guys but diversified,
escaping the fate of Sigmund and Milton S. Florsheim's, George Romanta
Kinney's, and Thomas McAn's companies (okay, McAnn was actually a golfer
whose name Ward Melville borrowed), which have all fallen on hard times.

If it isn't EULER, it ought to be. One of the only two mathematicians
I've seen honored by having their picture on paper money. (Sadly,
neither of the two bills is now in use.)

Well, I think he name is BALDRIGE, so I'll try that.
> What maternal sequel did Alex Haley put out seventeen years after
> "Roots"?
I don't know.
> What Italian composed the opera "Aida" in 1871?
VERDI, I think.
> What female jockey married Fred Astaire in 1980?
Oh dear. GIVENS?
> Which populous city in Nigeria was its capital until 1991?
And when was the last time you got email from there? LAGOS.
Well, the last letters down could be REMISS, and I can manage to see
an interpretation by which that could fit the clue. For M I'll try
just MOM.

LAGOS (I thought it still was the capital!)
Quilt answer: SHINER, last letters up.
This is the easiest ever quilt for me to ID from the subject
and be certain about.

LAGOS
The quilt answer is SHINER, reading the last letter of each word
upward.

Quilt is SHINER, which I got from the subject line alone. At least I
think it is, but it doesn't work with the two questions I think I know
the answers to. Two of the three can be right, but not all three.
Nevertheless, I'm sticking with it.

Correct (it'll take me a lot longer than 18 years to come up with the
new capital before the old one!).

Correct.

Only because UNDERDOG is eight letters .
Seven points.

Correct (hedging more successfully than most fund managers).
Five points.

Correct (I really need to go through all of my trivia questions and
remove the nationality whenever it's a dead or near-dead giveaway).

Incorrect (one logical leap away, as the first name of your answer
could be almost the same as the correct answer's).

Correct (I think I just deleted one a few minutes ago, which makes me
a little unhappy about my filtering).

Incorrect (right letter, wrong direction) and incorrect.
Four points.

Indeed, I was remembering the first name. You might say I had my
T. migratorius and my E. rubecula mixed up, if only those two pretty
ladies were from different continents instead of different coasts.
