I've been doing most of my playing on the 360 for the last little
while, but I liked Ship Simulator 2006 and picked up the 2008 version
a while back.
It's the sort of slow paced game that you can play with a KB and mouse
while you're having a beer.
It's got a decent variety of missions, but you need a pretty high end
system to turn up all the details and even then the ship details are
pretty sparse.
While large ships handle OK, the smaller craft like the speedboat and
jetski are pretty twichy and hard to drive without using a joystick.
In the end, I quickly lost interest in it because they broke one of
the coolest features. I picked up the first game because it was a
cheap game that supported my new TrackIR and it didn't seem to work
any more with 2008. I havent' checked for a patch for a while so it
may have been fixed by now.
I think a ship simulator could be fun, but they should be studying
(stealilng from) games like Silent Hunter 3.
3D locations with 3D crew members, active controls but still a decent
set of KB commands. (heading>view, view>heading, center rudder, ect)
They also need to keep working on their water effects. Driving a uboat
through an atlantic storm in SH3 feels a lot more like being at sea
than I've seen in either of the ship simulator games. (2008 has open
ocean travel)
