I looked thru the manual and the newsgroups, but couldn't find any
info on setting up the The Simpson's game on free play. Is there a
way to do it?

Can't be done. When we set these up for home use, we take out the
coin return chutes and coin switches. We put cherry buttons in the
coin return chutes with the wires from the coin switches so the player
can coin up.
It can be done on Xmen and Sunset Riders though :/...
