Ok,

So we all know that the Saturn and DC both have a small battery inside
them that helps the system remember the date and time. In the past I've
never really had any issues replacing them...or any issues in general
with what they do...but now...

So I go out and buy a new CR2032 for the Saturn, I pop it in, set the
date and time and assume everything is good. Next time I turn on the
Saturn, it asks for the date/time *again*. What the hell? Isn't the
battery supposed to take care of that? Also, with the Saturn, does the
battery actually help keep the items in the system's buit-in storage
alive, or are they always there?

I have this same issue with the DC(asking about date/time), and the
replacement batteries don't seem to help. What kills me is that these
two systems are plugged in 24/7...granted, they're not turned on 24/7,
but isn't being plugged in enough?

The Saturn's memory is powered, and not flash based. It and the clock both
depend on the battery. If you're having a problem with either, you should
check the contacts of the battery enclosure and make sure there's no
corrosion. Also, polarity is important, since it's really easy to put the
battery in upside down.

The Dreamcast is funny in that it only charges the clock battery when it's
rnuning, and not when it's not plugged in. It's not like the Xbox, always
passively drawing current to keep the clock running. That's actually
better in the long run, as nobody has ever had a Dreamcast catch on fire
because it was left plugged in. The Xbox, on the other hand...

Ok, I'll take a look. It's possible the contacts have some sort of
corrosion, or perhaps I've even put it in upside down.

Interesting, I'll keep that in mind. I guess I could just turn on the DC
from time to time, just to charge the battery for a short while. Hell,
even the occasional playthrough of Hydro Thunder should do it.

Thanks for the help! Smile
