Serious Sam 2 demo is available at 3dgamers.com and probably most
other mirrors.

Hmm, just had a play, I am not sure about this one. Think I might be
sticking to the old Sam games. Fairly pretty graphics, but nothing in
the visuals or gameplay to excite me.

had a go of it this morning.. hmmm, can't quite put my finger on it
but there's something missing from it. Also doesn't seem to be as fast
paced as Serious Sam 1 either.. oh and why does the opening level
remind me of 'Ratchet & Clank'?

It certainly takes some getting used to. But after a bit the game's
lineage is pretty obvious. I think it'll be a fun "run 'n gun" shooter
just like the first two installments. Nothing cerebral but just pure
old skool shooter fun.

One thing about the demo that I found immensely irritating. When
setting up the controls, any slight movement of the mouse binds the x
or y axis of the mouse to that action. Very messy in my opinion.

Overall I think I'll be buying this one though.

It killed half-hour. Best I can say. File Rush now have a very fast
bittorrent of the demo if anyone is still thinking of d-loading it.

Serious Sam isn't a tactical shooter. The two previous games were all
about fast paced run and gun gameplay with very simple enemy scripting.
This demo plays the same way. I am sure there will be huge open levels
in the game. The basic, back pedalling and picking off hundreds of
enemies, gameplay hasn't changed.

It performed real well on my 9800Pro. 1024x768, 2xAA, 8xAF, trilinear
filtering, medium shadows and highest shader quality and geometry LOD
were the settings I used. Picked the compressed textures settings by
the way. I did like how the interface is scaled with the resolution.

Not being a big fan of this shooting-gallery genre, I found the demo
mildly entertaining until I hit the jump sequence which I couldn't
figure out. It's not easy to solve platform puzzles in a first
person game. And this particular sequence is as irritating as the
one I got stuck on more than 10 years ago in Ultima8. That's when I
actually like the platform games genre.

I wish they hadn't included this jumping sequence in the demo.

But it has lost the soul of the original games, the humour and the
excitement. This is just shooting things for the sake of shooting
them, there is no fun for me.

Maybe after several incarnations (SS, SS:SE, Will Rock, Painkiller) the
idea of mindlessly blasting hordes of enemies is just getting old Wink?

SS, SS:SE and PK are still great fun though. SS2 is very comparable to
the still born Will Rock.

Reminds me of UT2004 looks-wise. I would guess the eye-candy and the
overhead of ragdolls and physics means the hordes of enemies have thinned
out a bit. It also seemed a lot easier, the first one was insanely
difficult. Well at least it was to this old codger who's used to leisurely
affairs like DOD.

One of the nice things with SS (I don't know if it is in SS2) was
being able to adjust the skill level on the fly so you don't have to
get stuck on annoyingly hard parts. I wish it would become a standard
feature as I have lots of games I never finished due to one stupidly
hard scene I couldn't get past.

I guess you meant "boring" which is what they all are to me Wink. Although I
did forget in my listing the worst example of the genre: "Nitro Family".

I just played the demo. It's not great. I needs better levels. There are
invisible walls EVERYWHERE. At least in Serious Sam they made hills that
were too steep to climb and stuff but in SS2 you just run up to
something and stop. You can't explore even a little bit. Even when you
get into the flying thing you can only fly down a little corridor
between where you took off and where you're meant to go. You can't fly
around the buildings. There are ledges going around the buildings near
where you start that it looks like you can run out on to explore but you
can't. You can't choose where to engage enemies from, only how far away.
There are meant to be physics in it but I didn't see much. There's a
vending machine in a secret area you can pull over and tug at a little.
You can destroy some stuff like park benches and trees. Shooting the big
flowers only seems to damage them with the sniper rifle, shotgun and
missile launcher though. I thought you'd be able to blow up the big dome
with the fountain at the start but your missiles go right through it.
pSS2 is a disappointment. I kind of like the first game better.
I don't know whether the levels would have been any larger or more open
if they weren't developing for a console simultaneously or not.
