Actually, wouldn't that go like this: "The first time your older self
reached the mine he tried the lowest possible combination. When that
failed, and he was unable to get past the door to where the time
travel scroll was, his 'survive without oxygen' potion wore off and he
died" ?
The scroll is in the chute which is past the locked door. Without it,
I don't think the first version of your older self can time travel at
all, can he?
