Archived from groups: alt>games>half-life (more info?)

Hi everybody!

I just installed the new Win 7 RC1 on my pc.
I usually run Win XP, but installed Win 7 so I can dual boot.

When I run Win XP, I have no problems running Steam, but if I try to run
Steam from within Win 7, Steam fails to load. Something about being
unable to write to the file Steam_54.mst, access denied.

I've tried deleting the blob-files, but Steam wont' work in Win 7.
Is it the dual boot environment? I'd hate to throw out my XP
installation, there's too much to back up. Surprised)

It isn't a matter of life and death, I'd just like being able to play my
Steam games in Win 7.

Any ideas, anyone?

Regards,
Claus

I had exactly the same problem.... I think this is correct but if you
still have probs shout and I'll reboot into Win7 later to check but I
believe gave up and I uninstalled it from Win7, then went to my Vista
Steam folder on a different drive and just put a shortcut to that.
Worked like a dream ever since.

Both Vista and Win7 are 64bit.

I am running Steam on W7 64 bit without issues, if this helps. Steam is not
in my C partition.

Thank you for trying to help.

I have XP on my C: drive, Steam on my F: drive and Windows 7 on my K: drive.
No problems running Steam in XP, but no luck in Win 7.
I tried making a shortcut to Steam in Win 7, but it would not work.

So I am still looking for a solution.

Have you downloaded Steam a second time, in W7 and installed it in the same
place as Steam for XP?

....No...
Should I?
I'm worried that I might corrupt the 'original' Steam files.

You really think I should?

Personally I did a clean install to a separate directory of Steam when
testing Windows 7 and it worked great. I didn't try copying my current
Steam directory over.

That's how I do it. I was running Vista and XP dualboot, then Vista and W7.
Worked for me.
