I just spent a little while playing the Roboblitz demo. It's a rather
fun Puzzle game with some average action elements.
http://www.3dgamers.com/games/roboblitz/
http://www.3dgamers.com/screenshots/games/roboblitz/
I'm quite enjoying the demo, the puzzles are quite refreshing, the
combat is pretty average. The thing that surprises me most is the fact
that the game is powered by the Unreal Engine 3.
If this game is also designed to be a tech demo of UE3 then I'm not
impressed. It's too colourful and very short on bump mapping. I hope
that any action games that license the engine turn out a lot better
looking than this.
It's not so much that the graphics are bad, it's just that they remind
me very much of PS2/ Gamecube type rendering. They just don't make me
think "wow" like I thought UE3 would.
Demo at http://www.3dgamers.com/games/roboblitz/downloads/ for anybody
that wants to try it for themselves.

GoW features UE3... the water effects are amazing. |

To be perfectly fair, the graphics in Roboblitz have grown on me a
little since I have played it more. The engine does shiny surfaces
very well. It's just a little too colourful and flat looking for my
liking.
Playing Source Engine games for the last few weeks doesn't help. I've
gotten used to the way that engines looks. Source is still superior in
my opinion, although I have only seen UE3 in the one game so far.

Nobody mentioning this looks like the first game to need a PhysX
install also. Maybe this is just included in the non-Steam demo but if
downloaded from Steam, there is a separate install for PhysX from
AGEIA. There should be a AGEIA in your Program folders now and there is
a little demo, just double-click on it to run it. Not much but kind of
cool. What isn't clear to me is that AGEIA has now put out a PhysX that
doesn't need a PhysX card, maybe it is running on the GPU? |

I've just spent a bit more time playing DM:MM and Source really is the
best engine going.
I thought the Spider Temple was a well realised virtual environment.
But, having now played through most of the Necropolis, I have to say
that it is easily one of the most impressive virtual environments that
I've ever seen rendered in any game.
DM:MM is definitely my nomination for GOTY. It's an excellent game
based on a fabulous engine. I hope many more games use Source in the
coming years.
I also hope that there will be a Source 2 in the not too distant
future.

I presume that it costs a fortune to licence. I can't see why else games
would have been using engines based on the Doom3 engine or the UT series. |

I've just bought it, although because of my ISP's port throttling, I've had
to buy it from the downloaded demo - as opposed to Steam.
On Steam, this was set to take - I think - 350mb of space. Downloading the
demo from gamershell was 85mb. It's a real issue for me, as 350Mb on Steam
can take me over 3 days to download. I can't change ISPs at this time, as
we may well be moving within 3 weeks.
Anyway, it's good fun as you say. Not sure how long I'll stick with it, but
for £8 you can hardly argue! |

I bet it does, that's one of the reasons why I hope there's a Source 2
soon. It should push the price of licensing the Source Engine down a
lot.
I'd love to see some of the smaller studios using a top notch engine
that is something different to the Doom 3 engine, the Q3 engine or
UTstuff as you say.
I wonder what Oblivion would have been like using Source?

Oddly enough I just paid for the full game today too. It's rather fun
for the price I think.

I'm not sure how Source would handle dense vegetation? Either way, I'm not
sure there's going to be a Source2 - I read that Valve were simply
developing the Source engine for the time and that improvements were
"organic" and not near the limit of the original yet? |

I saw another game that needed the Physx install a few months back. I ended
up uninstalling it though.
I have a feeling it might have been the ship simulator or similar? |

Bet on Soldier: Bloodsport is another game that needs it, although
it's a pointless install if you don't have a PhysX card in your
system.
I don't think this PhysX thing is going to catch on. Having to buy a
separate card as well as a dedicated graphics card just to make use of
it is too much to ask. The last time I looked the things weren't
exactly cheap either.

I believe the full game has it too. It's mentioned somewhere on
Tomshardware in the PhysX reviews.
I would be tempted to try a card if I had the money to blow on it,
but I suspect it would be a gimmick that I soon forgot I had.
