We've [1] had a few discussions about this in uk.games.video.gamecube,
and I hope to submit something to Control later today. But I'm a bit
unclear on a couple of technical procedural points, so I'd like a little
advice.
The current situation is this:
We have groups:
uk.games.video.gameboy (ugvgb)
uk.games.video.gamecube (ugvgc)
uk.games.video.handheld (ugvh)
ugvgb has been effectively superceded by ugvh, and gets relatively
little traffic. Anything on-topic in ugvgb is also on-topic in ugvh,
and we feel any threads would benefit from more discussion in the latter
group.
As such, we feel that ugvgb should be deleted. It was a good group in
its time, but will not be missed.
ugvgc is also experiencing relatively little traffic, but there is a lot
of traffic that would be there were it not nominally off-topic. As some
of you may be aware, soon all three videogames console manufacturers
will be releasing their new systems. Sony will release the Playstation
3 - this will fit into uk.games.video.playstation. Microsoft will
release the Xbox 360 - this will fit into uk.games.video.xbox. Nintendo
will release the Nintendo Revolution - this will not fit into any
existing group, and discussion has so far been fragmented between
uk.games.video.misc, ugvgc, and all other groups in the heirarchy.
We propose replacing ugvgc with uk.games.video.nintendo. Our reasoning
is this: Playstation and Xbox are the gaming brands of Sony and
Microsoft respectively. As such, their gaming hardware bears the
Playstation and Xbox names. Nintendo do not have a seperate brand -
their gaming brand is effectively "Nintendo".
To replace ugvgc with ugvn, would we have to remove ugvgc and create
ugvn seperately? Or is there a config-group process where we can simply
rename one group (while simultaneously changing the charter)? I realise
that technically the process will involve deleting one and creating the
other, but I'm not sure about procedure in this heirarchy.
As I see it, the renaming process would go as follows:
- Once passed through fast-track or voting, ugvn is created.
- The charter of ugvgc is changed to state that the group will be
closing, and all discussion should take place in ugvn.
- Possibly, an autoresponder is set up to reply to any new thread/post
in ugvgc with details of ugvn.
- After one month, ugvgc is rmgrouped.
I've had a search and I can't find details of a group renaming before,
so I'm not sure if there's precedent. Let me know if there is.
Any advice gratefully received (except from Krusty).
