A rebutal to the infamous Costickyan rant/piece... it makes some really
good points. It's a 180 from the perspective of companies like Valve and
proponents of digital distribution that say that publishers/retail are
inherently bad. Something to think about, at least.

On the other hand, maybe the piece is a bit too cheerleader? I mean, can
anybody actually say Electronic Arts actions, for instance, have been good
for the industry overall (I don't). It seems like companies like EA mostly
buy up good ideas- after somebody else developes them. Then they promptly
demolish them to destroy the competition and appropriate whatever scraps are
left over. And the power to control is also the power to destroy. Can
anybody seriously deny that companies like Gamestop, Wal Mart, and Best Buy
don't hold alot of leverege and power?

I've got to wonder how much leverage Wal Mart is going to keep what with
the increasing amounts of online sales.
If you don't need their shelves, their wishes become irrelevant.

Unfortunately, I'd guess a lot, and for a long time to come.

X, they's a bunch of WallyWorlds, great big huge WallyWorlds, too, and they
do move the jack.

Oh I know that. I'm just wondering how long they're going to be a
critical portion of sales with online sales and distribute schemes like
STEAM going on.

Wallyworld's routine of "only family values" or somesuch requiring
special "defanged" versions of games are going to make them not worth it
at some point.

I see lots of console titles at the local walmart, but no PC games at
all.

I hate Wal-Mart not so much because of the game censorship (in reality,
few games have been censored), but because of their union busting
exploitationist practices, and the fact they are even more ruthless than
Microsoft or EA at destroying competition. Oh, and I don't like their
anti-Choice bullshit at their pharmacies, especially as it is against the
law in some states (like Massachussettes, I think Wal-Mart is running into
legal problems there). They are far more dangerous than just being a bunch
of squares who want to take away young punks music and games.

Eh. If you look at Galactic Civilizations 2, the only place to get a copy
of it was actually Walmart and Best Buy. And only Walmart had the
Collector's Edition. If you pre-ordered it from EB or Gamestop or probably
even Stardock themselves you'd probably still be waiting for it.

That's nice, but it in no way changes the fact that the Wal mart here
doesn't have _ANY_ PC games at all.

Maybe it's a US/Canada thing and only the US wallyworlds carry pc games.

EB does this enourmously (because at the moment, there are far too many
EB/Gamestops around). Some EB's have tons of PC games, others have one
tiny shelf.

Two games I had to go to Best Buy to get were Urban Reign (for the ps2,
that EB didn't even carry!!), and the Gothic 2 gold (again which EB
doesn't even carry). I go to EB, or have in the past, because it was a
specialty store that has the games that gamers want, not some place
just pandering to parents who want their kids to leave them alone for
awhile so fill the house with console games.

This 'niehborhood focus' of stores makes good business sense, yet I
don't see much point in having a store at all as it's almost always
cheaper, easier and more convienient to go online to buy just about
anything.

I doubt it. I'm in the US and I've found that between different Best Buy
or Walmart locations they simply focus on different things. My local Walmart
and Best Buy locations really focus on neither PC or console games. The PC
games, (and software too) section of Best Buy sucks outright and the console
section is tucked away in a corner, and isn't that great either. They're
more interested in bigger ticket items like PCs, monitors and printers, as
well as digital cameras, cell phones and appliances. Walmart's selection is
better on both, but still not great. In a city about 20 miles away I've
found Walmart and Best Buy with selections of PC games (and software) tons
better than the locations about a mile from my house.
Your Walmart may have just decided there isn't enough of a market in PC
games in your area to make it worth it to stock them over using that space
to stock other items that do sell.

With the exception of mmorpgs it is. Remove the console ports from

That with PC gaming is dead must be typical American thing. I looked
best sales list here in Sweden and there is only two non PC game on
them. On the other side best sales lists in US don't have ANY PC
games. So it's up to you guys:-).

We don't have Walmart here but name tells all. It sound like Darth
Wader man - EVIL Smile. Here we have nice british Game shops with kind
personal and LOT of games for Gamecube, Playstation and other consoles
and other HALF of shop is PC games (but many of them are console
conversions --> US responsibility again)...

I actally bought Playstation 2 last week to my son (it's cheap now
man) and played many of console games on pc. Definitely not for me.
Consoles are for pple som have LOT of time to waste. But even if PC
gaming dies out (i doubt it, i think this console trend will die out
very soon when new xbox and PS become old news) there will come
something new and maybe better. Remember Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore
and atari & Amiga. For me they had a 100 times better games than
booring PC Wink

Have anybody some good tips for Playstation RPGs Smile

Only game I relly played which is console based is Final Fantasy VII

Not surprising, considering the broken state of the higher-end console
market. PS3 late, Xflop360 only a product trickle and people holding
off buying Xbox and PS2 games. My local StopGames ( er, EB) has
huge bunches of USED console-games and used-DVDs for sale, lots
of empty Xbox360 game-cases ( for upcoming games..), only a small
shelf of PC games (new of course, since StopGames told them to get
out of PC used-games) and very slack business.
My local CompUSA and Fry's have both got large selections of
PC games.
