REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the following changes
in the uk.* Usenet hierarchy:

remove unmoderated newsgroup uk.games.video.gameboy

Newsgroup line:
UK based Discussion about Nintendo's GameBoy Rangeuk.games.video.gameboy

*** ALL DISCUSSION MUST TAKE PLACE IN UK.NET.NEWS.CONFIG ***
*** CROSSPOSTED TO UK.GAMES.VIDEO.GAMEBOY ***

This is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time.
Further procedural details are given below.

RATIONALE: uk.games.video.gameboy

Since uk.games.video.handheld (ugvh) was created, traffic on
uk.games.video.gameboy (ugvgb) has steadily decreased. All discussion
that is on-topic in ugvgb is also on-topic in ugvh, and discussions would
benefit from the wider audience that ugvh attracts - although the usersets
of both groups are very similar indeed.

A pre-RFD post to uk.games.video.gameboy (Message-ID:
<so5ut2-1s.ln1 RemoveThis @dekay.dynu.com>) regarding the reorganisation of the
uk.games.video.* groups resulted in no posters objecting to the idea.

Existing CHARTER: uk.games.video.gameboy

This group is for the discussion of the Nintendo Game Boy range (including
the Game Boy, the Game Boy Pocket, the Game Boy Color, and the Game Boy
Advance, plus any future handhelds from Nintendo bearing the "Game Boy"
name) and its games and peripherals.

Links to UK focused web sites, relating to the GameBoy are welcome, but
should not be repeated more than once a month.

Reviews, hints, tips and cheats are welcome, however spoilers should be
protected with spoiler space of between 10 and 25 lines. Long reviews or
solutions (100 lines or more) should be placed on a web page, and its URL
posted.

Discussions related to piracy are strongly discouraged as they tend to
quickly become inflammatory and should be avoided.

Advertising

No more than 1 post per organisation/person per month and post headers
MUST be marked "FA: " (For Auction) or "FS: " (For Sale). Such adverts
should be limited to 5 lines in length.

Cross-Posting

Cross-posting in general is discouraged. Posts relating to the
connectivity between the Game Boy and other game systems is allowed within
the uk.games.video.* hierarchy. Cross-posting to newsgroups outside of the
uk.games.video.* hierarchy is strongly discouraged as it may invite
postings which do not conform to this charter.

Binaries & Formatting

Encoded binaries (e.g. pictures, compressed files, etc.) are forbidden.
Cryptographic signatures (e.g. PGP) may be used where authentication is
important and should be as short as possible.

Posts must be readable as plain text. HTML, RTF and similarly formatted
messages are prohibited. To see how to make your newsreader comply with
this, read <http://www.usenet.org.uk/ukpost.html>.

END CHARTER

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of
the process, any potential problems with the proposal should be raised
and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of 10
days, starting from when this RFD is posted to uk.net.news.announce
(i.e. until September 19th) after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be
posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it.
Alternatively, the proposal may proceed by the fast-track method. Please
do not attempt to vote until this happens.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the "Guidelines for Group Creation
within the UK Hierarchy" as published regularly in uk.net.news.announce
and is available from http://www.usenet.org.uk/guidelines.html (the UK
Usenet website). Please refer to this document if you have any questions
about the process.

DISTRIBUTION:

This RFD has been posted to the following newsgroups:
uk.net.news.announce
uk.net.news.config
uk.games.video.handheld
uk.games.video.gameboy

Why is this "strongly discouraged" instead of "forbidden"? Or did I miss
something?

When Nintendo release the Gameboy Evolution people might wonder where the

I fully agree with this proposal, it makes sense given the number of
different handhelds (other than the gameboy) available from both
nintendo and other companies.

That is what the current charter says. This RFD is to remove the group,
thus what the charter says today is sort of irrelevant.

Of course. I clearly did miss something there.

I don't. That's why there's a discussion and may be a vote before any
deletion.

Strangely enough, I strongly disagree for pretty much the same reason. I
can understand the rational behind the move to remove the group, but the
gameboy family is more than large enough to warrant a category of its
own - from the original gameboy, through colour, GBA, GBA SP and the
forthcoming Micro. Given that people still play Original GB games on
their new shiny DS's (don't they, deKay?), it's good to have a dedicated
place where that can happen. Sure, the group has been quiet of late, but
this is largely due to (a) a distinct lack of the kind of trolling we
see in the other groups and (b) the launch of two new non-gameboy
handhelds - for pretty much the first time in ten years.

I say leave it alone - it's not harming anyone.

I support the removal of this group. It's dead anyway.

He's not "speaking for everyone else". discussion relating to an new
products in the Game Boy line will be perfectly on-topic in the
handhelds group. I don't see there being any problem with the proposed
changes.

By that token, discussion of the xbox or playstation is on topic in
..misc so those two groups should be removed as well.

Yet again a fine proposal sir. The traffic in uk.games.video.gameboy is at
an all time low, any discussion that is left could easily be dealt with by
the new group uk.games.video.handheld. The post by someone else who stated
discussion is low because of a distinct lack of trolling just about summed
up the whole situation for me!
