Stars, yeah. Cool, yeah, character kind of looks like Doom 3. WTF? That
model is fricked up, something wrong with the lighting on that eye.
Ooohhhh. hehe, yeah, cool. Whoa!
BTW, I had a bitch of a time getting this running and it still doesn't
load every time. It would just CTD over and over again while trying to
load the new game. People will be ecstatic that Quake 4 has preserved
the Doom 3 setup system where you have to shut the game down and
restart it to accept new system settings. Also, it is using OpenAL,
which doesn't install with the game and you have to download from
OpenAL.org if you have the CTD during loading problem. That may or may
not fix the problem, depending on your sound system. The settings
autodetect is pretty good but the sound settings should have been
expanded more or not have such an effect on the overall stability of
the game. It needs to be patched but I don't blame id or Raven. This
seems to be more of an Activision problem where their beta testing
seems to have really gone downhill over the past year.
As for the outdoors, it looks more like Raven not being able to do it
as well as id. There wasn't much in the way of outdoors levels in Doom
3 but I remember stepping outside on the surface of Mars that first
time and just stopped to look around, thinking "yes, this must be what
the surface of Mars is like" while running out of oxygen because of no
helmet. The outdoors sky is probably the most distracting in Quake 4
but it isn't anything major. There is enough detail in the scenes and
the terrain to compensate for low rez sky textures. Yes, distracting
but not a game killer. |

| Patience: Pretty soon, someone will no doubt release a MOD chock full
of fascinating high-resolution sky textures. Heck, someone released
custom flashlights for Doom 3, so just be patient and soon you'll be
basking in the glorious light of an alien dawn. Or something.

P4 3.4GHz Northwood, 800MHz FSB, 2GB RAM, Geforce 6800GT 256MB,
on-board Analog Devices 5.1 surround sound, WinXP Pro SP1
I have F.E.A.R. DVD edition installed on the same system and it is
running smoothly at 1024 by 768, except for a slight pause during HD
load and checkpoint saves. It looks and plays very nice. Both games'
settings auto detect set everything high at 1024 by 768. But Quake 4
has a warning that the on-board sound is not OpenAL, even though I
loaded the driver for it.
The Quake 4 problem seems to be partly system configuration related but
it looks like it is more due to another problem. I got the regular CD
version, 4 CDs, and several people that got the same on Gamefaqs are
having similar problems. It looks like people that got the DVD version
and have Sound Blaster cards are not having any problems. I had an
install hard crash with CD2, which was very strange, then just started
re-install over. It got past CD2 this time but then crashed at the end
of CD4. I re-installed, just overwriting, and got it installed. It
starts up OK but as soon as it goes to a New Game or Game Save load, it
CTDs...a lot. It is pretty bizarre, and based on what other people are
reporting on Gamefaqs, it looks like there is some kind of corruption
with the CD version, which ends up making the game look like it is
buggy. Some people have gone back to their EB or Gamestop and they are
saying they have heard there might be a problem with the CD version and
are exchanging it. I was having to try like 10 or 15 times for the game
to load, but once it loaded, it seemed to be running fine. It does look
pretty. But, I am now at a door to the next level and it just keeps
crashing there. One time, I reloaded that level just before opening the
door, and it opened with a whole bunch of collision detection boxes in
white showing up all over. That was bizarre. I am going to completely
uninstall it, wipe the CDs with alcohol and not install Punkbuster
during the installation. But it might be that I need to get it
exchanged.
Anyway, in the meantime, I am just playing F.E.A.R. |

Or maybe somebody will port Q4 to the Crytek engine.....

That could happen John. But they'd have to remove all the gameplay
(enemies, plot etc) so that the CPU would have time to pixellate yet
more boring sunsets etc. |
