I have the CD version with the valid key, DX 9.0c, 5.10 ATI drivers,
appropriate hardware and a fully patched XP system but the game just clears
the screen and then returns to the desktop. I tried a cracked version of
the .exe to see if there was some copy protection issue but this just gave
me a application error with nothing to go on.
I cannot see any mention of this problem in this newsgroup. Does anyone
know of such a problem and how to sort it ?
Thanks |

Try reinstalling DX9c, if you haven't already. |

You have to get it exchanged, there are errors on the early shipment CD
version. At least, that is the conclusion I have come to after having
the same problem. There are messages from people saying it is due to
the OpenAL, latest drivers, type of card and so on, but on the other
hand, it is kind of strange there aren't more people reporting the
exact same problem you are having. I actually managed to get mine to
run, sort of, being able to complete the first level but it would take
trying to restart it possibly a hundred times before it would load
once, then it would crash intermittently here and there after that.
Finally, since the problem looked like it was during loading, I tried
the trick of unpacking the pk files. That is when I found out there
were CRC errors, strangely, only for certain normal maps. Somebody
screwed up preparing the master. It sounds like this compression error
problem didn't happen for the DVD version. |

Yes, they all work. DXDIAG reports that all is well.
I will re-install it but there were no error messages though |

He said it didn't work, but to answer the question, you can download
DX9c from Microsoft and reinstall or some games that require DX9c will
have a separate folder that you can reinstall from. |

If you've futzed about with the vid-cards/monitor's refresh settings,
try resetting it to default so it can use 60Hz. Some games are
particularly anal about that. Resetting sometimes does the trick |

Quake4 uses OpenGL and OpenAL, not proprietary DirectX. |

Check your firewall.. Zone Alarm messes up every game I install it seems. The
first time it always asks me if I want to allow it to call home.. until that's
sorted out.. some games won't work.
