Hi All,

When were prestige classes first announced, outside the playtest? I
remember they were mentioned in the PC builder software that came with
the PH (but not implemented there). I expect they were part of the
buildup before 3e was released, but I'm curious about when they were
first mentioned to the public.

They announced Assassins right away at the '99 Gencon, and later
someone slipped they were only coming back as a prestige class, and it
went from there. 8th December '99 of Eric Noah's unofficial 3e news had
the first talk about what these "Prestige Classes" might be (to wit,
something like the old Bard) from the WotC boards.

There was a pretty constant trickle of all sorts over that preceeding
year. Funny to think they had the PBH basically finished by the time they
announced it a year before publication, unlike 4e where they've nearly
finished it four months after publication. Damn shame that Hasbro ate our
little game a month after that 3e annoucement.

Heh. I've had a look back through here for earliest pick. Nothing on
PClasses. The game popped up a couple times earlier as being in playtest,
but Sea Wasp quickly reminded people of the NDA and squashed the rumors.

On Aug 4 1999 Staffan Johansson posted here: "According to the D&D
FAQ TSR recently placed on their site (which borrows large parts from our
own rgfd FAQ), 'there should not be a true third edition for many years
yet.'"
Two days later the 3e website went live. 8]

And four years after that, we had D&D 3.5.

I'm fairly sure I remember asking about it in here, back when I had my
previous email < peter.TakeThisOut@knutsen.dk >. My question would have been
prompted by me having encountered the term "prestige class" somewhere;
quite possibly in 3.0 promotion material. So you can try going back to
the earliest post from me which contains the phrase "prestige class, and
then assume that the PRC promo buzz started happning 1 to 6 weeks before
that.
