Okay, I've started watching the special, and I was surprised to hear
new voices for the characters.

Here are my impressions of each:

Ash - an improvement, if only because the voice is deeper

May - I like her new voice

Brock - raspy; sounds like a Batman wannabe

Max - okay

Misty - sounds nearly identical to the old voice

Professor Oak - okay

Jessie - okay

James - okay

Meowth - okay

All of the new voice actors seem to be trying to imitate the old voice
actors. Some suceed more than others.

It's been announced for a while, believe it or not.

Eh. Admittedly, he sounds like more like a guy now, but it's not that
much better.

A little deep for my liking but okay otherwise.

Not impressed by Brock myself, either.

I'm not really impressed by the new VAs for Joy and Jenny either. Then
again, I much prefered their first VAs...

So far as I know, yes.

Yep. It's kinda like watching the new Macross dub after being used to
"Robotech" for so long.

> Also I really do think it was about time Ash's voice changed.

Agreed. The thing is, for those of you that have been with Pokemon
since the beginning (or at least started watching during the first
season), Ash's vocie WAS deeper - while Veronica Taylor was voicing
him.

For some reason, Ash's voice suddenly shot up really high all of a
sudden and had remained that way until last week.

I don't know why she did that.

I much prefer the way that she originally voiced Ash.

Watching this special was basically painful for me. It was a bunch of
new people trying to imitate the originals and stripping the characters
of their personalities. Some new VA's were more technically successful
at matching than others, but the souls were gone. I think there was so
much emphasis placed on matching the originals that the new VA's wound
up sounding forced and flat across the board.

Ash is Kayzie Rogers, who is in One Piece (forget the character's name)
and has worked on Pokemon before. Oak is Jimmy Zoppi, also in various
4Kids/NY dubs. I can't really place the others specifically, but Bill
Rogers and Billy Regan (aka Bill Timoney) are NY actors, and Michelle
Knotz won that BAAF contest a few years back. I don't know who the
others are.

Ash sounded strange, didn't like it. Brock--not good. Misty sounded
close but it wasn't the same at all--just sounded like a put-on
imitation--her feisty cool attitude is gone. Same for Jessie, but the
VA went way overboard. Jessie used to be funny and layered and a
scheming little minx. Now she sounds constipated and forced.
James--probably one of the worst. The VA didn't even match, for one
thing, and the acting was awful. Meowth was very close, in both tone
and acting. Oak--I just kept hearing Jimmy Zoppi doing all the other
old guy characters he's ever done. Didn't sound right for Oak. May
sounded way too old, and Max sounded okay, but again, colorless and
humorless like the rest. The villain was okay but flat in both masked
and unmasked modes.

The writing seemed to suffer from the new staffing as well. The script
has no spark to it. Agh, they ruined this. I've seen better fandubs.

I like them, but it will be very hard (initially) to get used to the new
VA's.
Also I really do think it was about time Ash's voice changed.

Let's see.
-Ash was a little deeper which was okay
-Brock's voice didn't even sound human, I recommend the guy visit a
throat specialist
-Oak's was off as well but manageable
-May's voice was a little old for the part but otherwise okay
-no discernable difference from old to new with Misty and the Team
Rocket voices.

The most discernable difference was that the acting sucked.

I've been out of the loop. I still watch, but i don't keep up on any
news. Can someone point me to some more info, or explain what happened?
All i know is one of the companies involved in the show (is it 4kids?)
is no longer involved.

I flipped on the show for a few minutes just to check it out (i watch
the shows in the evening), and was pretty surprised to hear new voice
actors, although i had a bit of an idea it would happen eventually. I
really don't like it. I've been watching it for all these years and
suddenly everything's wonky. I know it can't be helped, but it's really
annoying. Only Misty sounds okay to me, and James is just ruined (after
i finally got a hold of "Fortune Hunters" just this morning after years
of wanting, just to hear him do his manic Flaming Moltres.) I'd almost
rather they just had all new voices, instead of people doing bad
impressions of the old voices.

Sorry for the babbling. Wink

So all of them are new actors? Coulda fooled me, especially Meowth and
Max. Those were the only ones that I could've sworn were the
originals.

Ash could get some getting used to. I think Luffie's voice actually
fits him better than Veronica Taylor's. I just wish this was the voice
he was using since the beginning. It's just so much different, it's
almost a big as shock as Brock's new voice.

Speaking of, whoever replaced Eric Stuart was trying WAY to hard to
sound like Brock. He sounded like he was playing a dog or something.
Someone get this dude a lozenge. When he dashed off to get Officer
Jenny, I was all, "Yay! I won't have to hear him for most of the
movie!" And James sounds like a bad Snagglepuss impression. "Team
Rocket's blasting off, stage right!"

Oak isn't way off, just off enough to sound wrong.

I almost thought Misty and Jessie had their original voice actress,
too, but Misty was a little off somehow.

I didn't notice Joy, but I know Jenny was new. I think Jenny is the
only one besides Ash that's actually an improvement. Or maybe I just
think that because I though whoever was doing Jenny before did a really
bad job. She wasn't believable at all in that torch-carrying episode.

I'll miss Veronica Taylor and the others too, hopefully they'll do other
anime projects. I noticed the different voices this morning as well.

Torch-carrying episode? You mean way back in Season 1?

Ah, I was wondering how long it would take for this thread to appear...

My immediate opinion? Painful to listen to.

Part of it's the shock of hearing totally different voices for such
familiar characters, but frankly, a lot of the acting was simply
awful.

Ash, Brock, and James were the worst, hands down.

* Ash's voice acting was two-dimensional, unemotive, and totally
lacking in empathy. He talked like a swaggering jock instead of
a headstrong but likeable kid.

* Brock seriously needed a throat lozenge. And his acting was
even more wooden than Ash's. It was such a relief when he
more or less disappeared from the film.

* James's VA was trying WAY too hard to imitate a voice actor he
sounded nothing like. This is usually a recipe for ignominious
failure, and this was no exception.

* I got used to Misty's new voice pretty quickly. It was pretty
much unobjectionable, although I'm going to miss Rachel Lillis.

* The same goes for Max. Actually, I stopped noticing the new
VA after his first couple of lines, which is probably a good
thing.

* May didn't talk very much, but I do think her voice was quite
a bit too deep. The balance between May and Misty's voices
wasn't quite right, I think... Misty's kind of tomboyish, but
May is a more "girly" (if you can forgive me for using such a
stereotypical term) character, and previously their voices
reflected that. May having a deeper voice than Misty (at
least in a couple of their exchanges) was profoundly weird.

* Professor Oak was a bit strange sounding -- not as good in
acting quality as the old VA -- but more or less acceptable.

* I forgot to notice Jenny's and Joy's new voices, which I assume
means that they were OK.

Why on Earth did they feel the need to change acting studios, anyway?
Does consistency mean nothing to the suits in charge? (OK, dumb
question.) Are they bypassing the actor's union now, or something?

The new voice doesn't have the cheeriness of the old voice and the upper
class accent sounds forced.
