Greetings
Has anyone come across a good way to play roleplaying games online?
I have found it increasingly hard to get players together (thanks
among other things to WoW). With everybody and there brother now being
online I hope that it would improve the situation if I could provide
them with a means of playing online..
anyone? |

I kinda like email. It allows everybody to play in their own time. That
does mean it moves a bit slowly at times, but it works well enough.

Some people arrange a common time and use a chat room or IRC channel.
There's also "play by post" where everyone posts to a common board. The ones
I used to use were
www.dndonlinegames.com
www.myth-weavers.com
rpol.net
www.opengamingworld.com

Google Groups actually may not be a bad way of posting and organizing
a play-by-post type of game. The Pages section can be used for any
HTML display the DM wants to put up; the Discussion section can be
used for character communication; Files section to store char sheets
and any images.
Nice thing about a Group is that it gets its own email address, the
group of players can communicate with everyone just by sending to the
one email address. The group owner can add/remove/limit the group
members, keep it private or open to public. Etc.
See my next post about our campaign, Rescue of Midville, in a Group. |

Or a social MUD/MUSH; some may even provide support tools for this.
(Your players are welcome at mine: telnet mush.pennmush.org 4201).
But play by email, asynchronously, is also quite interesting,
especially if the GM also likes to play literary editor.

I've been using chat-based gaming for about 4 years now, and it works
okay, if a little slower than table gaming.
I gave up on email based gaming as being entirely too slow and
chaotic.
