Karl walked into the contest house, hoping to see a familiar face.

"How's it going, alby?"

Karl was startled. He spotted Hugo, a boy he'd met on the way to
Sandgem Town. He worked in a shop, and had given Karl some good
advice before he started his journey proper.

"How are you?" asked Karl. "What are you doing in Jubilife?"

"Managed to get the day off work," said Hugo. "Fancied trying out a
contest. Scrubber here deserves to stretch her legs a bit."

Scrubber was Hugo's Pachirisu, who was dashing around speedily. Her
tail was crackling with electricity.

"Wow," said Karl. "I can't believe you're going to enter a contest."
It seemed to Karl as though everyone was going to be part of this
contest – Keiko, Hugo, that reporter ...

"I've never competed before," Hugo admitted. "I don't know what to
expect." He grinned. "Are you competing too, alby?"

"No!" said Karl. "I wouldn't be any good."

"Oh, go on," Hugo encouraged. "Nothing to lose. Might as well see if
you enjoy it. And it'd be nice to see a friendly face."

Karl was about to protest, but with two of his friends already
competing, it seemed silly to be the only one left out.

"Alright, then," he said. "But I'll lose so hard, it won't be funny."

"That's half the fun, alby!" said Hugo. "The risk of losing. Makes
it worthwhile when you do well. I'm not expecting to get far."

And so, Karl and Hugo went to register together. When they'd
finished, Karl spotted another familiar face – Keiko was back.

"I like nicknames," shrugged Hugo. "Karl gets to be 'alby' because of
his white hair."

"I'm not actually an albino ..." started Karl.

"Cool!" said Keiko. "Do I get a nickname?"

"Course," said Hugo. He looked at her for a moment, considering.
"You can be 'Fresh'. Because nudism is refreshing, and so are you."

"Fresh?" said Keiko, wrinkling her nose.

"I can spell it with a P-H, if that makes it cooler," said Hugo.

"Hang on, though," said Karl. "You said something about
combinations."

"It's pretty easy, really," said Keiko. "Most obvious rules – use
varied attacks, try not to repeat them. Use attacks that go well
together ..."

"Like what, exactly?"

"Oh, there are millions of combinations!" giggled Keiko. "Like ... if
you use a Bubble attack, it slows you down ... and Bide is a great
move to use last. That's one example. One of the basics, anyway.
When you get better, you make up your own, and try to put on a great
show."

"But then we battle, right?"

"Yes," said Keiko. "But again, the point is to put on a good
performance, not necessarily to defeat your opponent."

"You're worrying too much, alby," said Hugo. "Throw yourself into
it! You might lose, but it'll be a fun loss."

"Okay," said Karl uncertainly. "I just won't take it too seriously.
Just a fun match."

"Anyway, got to go prepare," said Hugo. "See you lovebirds later."

"No! We're not ..." started Karl, but Hugo had left, concealing the
glee on his face.

"You ready?" asked Keiko. "It's starting soon."

((No worries. It's fun to have a bit of downtime beforehand. I
thought you'd like to start the contest off yourself, though, since
this means more to Keiko than to Karl.))

This is frustrating. I thought I'd be able to gain some inspiration by
watching Pokemon Contests on YouTube, but I can't find any proper videos. I
can find contests set to pop music, but the feel is all wrong. I can't even
remember how Marian opens the contests.

Well, this is PW!. We can take liberties. After all, the animé
contests are totally different to the games ones.

If memory serves, though, the contest opens with a general
introducition, and an introduction to the judges (one of whom will
only respond by saying "remarkable!" - he's my favourite), and then
the co-ordinators take in in turn to show off their Pokémon.

Are Cartoon Network not endlessly repeating the show in the US? We
get around six repeats a day over here, between the different
channels, so we're rarely that far away from *a* contest, even if it
isn't the Jubilife one.

But if you can't find inspiration at all, maybe you'd be best off
using the games as a back-up contest. Maybe Jubilife organises
different types of contests at different times?

The judges are contest chairman Mr. Contesta, Pokemon Fan Club President Mr.
Sukizo (or something), and the local Nurse Joy. I looked them up yesterday.
Sukizo's name is apparently a pun on his Japanese phrase, "I like it!"

They might be repeating, but I only watch the show Saturdays at 9:30 AM,
when it's a new episode. I remember seeing a commercial recently for the
weekday showings, but it had a lot of Misty in it.

I was in more of a funk yesterday, though. I can probably slap something
together today.

"Ladies and Gentlemen!" the lively lady accouncer declared as she stepped
out on stage. "Welcome to the Jubilife Pokemon Contest!"

The crowd cheered excitedly. Pokemon Contests were known for their
spectacle, and the Jubilife Contest was no exception. This early in the
season there would be many hit-or-miss entries, but the fans still eagerly
anticipated fantastic displays from their favorite coordinators, not to
mention some hilariously bad attempts by those with more ego than skill who
would invariably spend more time arguing with the judges than they had
training on any given day. The time Mr. Contesta was almost stabbed was on
many a "Worst of" highlight reel.

"We have an amazing spectacle for you tonight folks!" the announcer
continued, "With coordinators from around the world and around the corner!
With me tonight, as always, is our fabulous panel of judges! Contest
Chairman, Mr. Raoul Contesta!"

"I'm expecting great things tonight," noted a middle-aged man in a red suit
with grey streaks in his hair.

"Pokemon Fan Club President, Mr. Sukizo!" the annoucer went on, moving to a
short man with a blissed-out look on his face.

"Remarkable!" he remarked.

"And Jubilife City's very own Nurse Joy!" the announcer finished.

"Hi everyone!" the ubiquitous pink-haired nurse said. "I hope you'll have
as much fun as I am!"

"And don't forget yours truly!" the announcer added. "Master of Ceremonies,
Marion! Now, we have a ton of coordinators waiting backstage, just chomping
at the bit to show you what they've got, so without further ado, let's get
this show rolling!"

((I'm going to leave it right there for today. I could probably start
things off with Keiko or Vespiquen, but I don't want to spend too much time
writing this today. I might wind up having to rush things.))

Sukizo is definitely my favourite thing about contests. Although I do
like that Mr Contesta gives an in-depth review.

Shame. I used to find the same thing, actually - only older episodes
got repeated ad infinitum, with newer episodes a one-time thing for
ages.

“What’s the format?” asked Karl, nudging Keiko. The fear was dawning
on him. “Is it just a battle?”

“First round isn’t a battle,” explained Keiko. “We all go out and
show off our Pokémon. Use their best moves, and any combinations
you’ve mastered.”

Karl hadn’t mastered any combinations. “I’ll just use my best moves,
then.”

He heard a snort from behind him. He turned to see a girl with short,
black hair in a navy dress that seemed far plainer than those of other
contestants. He turned back to Keiko.

“What makes a good contest move?” he asked.

The girl behind him snorted again, and he turned.

“Is she laughing at me?” asked Karl, hurt.

“Ignore her,” said Keiko. “Probably an egotistical contestant who
thinks winning is everything.”

“I suppose I must look pretty stupid,” said Karl sadly.

“You’ll be fine!” Keiko insisted. “This’ll be a friendly enough
match, with me and Hugo competing.”

Outside, the announcer called on the first contestant – someone named
Martha Barlow. The black-haired girl in the navy dress walked smartly
out on stage.

Karl and Keiko watched Martha’s performance on a monitor in the back.
She had a Skorupi, who started off with an Acupressure move, and
followed it up with an impressive Bite. She continued with a Scary
Face, and ended the round with a powerful Crunch.

Karl could tell she was doing well – the crowd were going wild, and
many other contestants were watching intently, with occasional
mumblings of “good move” or “ah, interesting”. But to Karl, she
simply seemed to be going through some basic attacks. Some pretty
impressive moves, certainly – far better than most of his Pokémon’s
moves – and co-ordinated well, but surely there was more to it than
that. Were these examples of combinations, like Keiko and Hugo had
talked about?

Soon, Martha returned backstage. She seemed perfectly calm, still.
No trace of emotion betrayed.

Everyone waited, anticipating the next contestant to be called
through.

((Thought I’d add a new contestant to the mix, just for fun. I’ve
hopefully left it on a good place for Keiko to jump in.))

"You're sure this is the right name?" Marian asked the stage manager.
Martha had just gone off-stage to much applause, giving the announcer one
last chance to confirm the name she was going to call next. Her microphone
was off so she wouldn't broadcast their discussion.

"It's what it says on the form," the stage manager replied. "An official
had to write it down, since the contestant couldn't write, but she says
that's the name she was given. The contestant insists that this is who she
is."

"Alright," Marian begrudgedly accepted. "I'm just the messenger. I can't
help what people call themselves."

Sereptitiously reactivating her mic, Marian stepped back on stage. She
flung an arm out dramatically and called out, "Next up on stage..." She
grimaced almost imperceptibly, but otherwise maintained her joyously excited
facade. "... Miss Human!"

The Vespiquen dressed in the clothes she stole from Keiko fluttered out on
stage with Combee close behind. The Combee floated out to stage center,
gazing out at the crowd. The right head looked excited. The left head
looked enchanted. The bottom head looked bored.

"Vespi!" the so-called Miss Human declared. "Quen!"

"Combee!" the left and right heads called out.

"...Bee," the bottom head chimed in with barely perceptible enthusiasm. All
three head concentrated and increased their fluttering. Soon, a sparkling,
pink haze filled the stage.

"Combee starts off with a wonderfully aromatic Sweet Scent!" Marian
declared.

"Vespi!" Miss Human commanded, pointing a talon dramatically. "Vespiquen!"

"Combee!" the left and right heads confirmed. The bottom head started to
say something, but decided it didn't give a Ratatta's pattoot. Again,
Combee's wings fluttered, this time forcing wind through the scented haze,
causing it to split into two distinct clouds.

"Now Combee is using Gust to part the Sweet Scent!" Marian expositioned.

"Vespi!" Miss Human declared. "Quen! Quen! Quen!"

Combee darted about the two clouds, rapidly letting off Gust after Gust. It
moved faster and faster, not giving the haze time to dissipate on its own.
The Gusts actually kept the pheromones in check, keeping the clouds from
moving or merging. Soon, Combee had the Sweet Scent in six spinning columns
about the stage.

"Combee might not know a lot of moves," Marion proclaimed, "But what it does
know it knows well! Its using Gust to keep the Sweet Scent in place like a
frantic plate spinner!"

"Vespi!" Miss Human declared, swinging an arm out to the side. "Vepsiquen
quen!"

Combee returned to stage center, with the six Sweet Scent columns in front
of it. It took a moment to catch its breath, then inhaled sharply in
preparation for a big Gust attack. Once loosed, it knocked the bottoms out
from all six columns, scattering the Sweet Scent out into the audience. The
columns cascaded backwards, spilling out over Combee in a sort of
bishie-sparkle. Combee dipped a little, actually nearly collasping, but
caught itself and remained aloft.

"Combee made excellent use of the few moves it knew," Mr. Contesta stated.
"But it seemed pretty worn out by the end."

"Remarkable!" Mr. Sukizo remarked.

"A dazzling and sweet-smelling performance, to be sure," Nurse Joy added.
"But I'm concerned that Combee may have over-exerted itself."

"That Vespiquen's better than I thought," Keiko said pensively backstage.
"We can beat her, though. Right, Skyler?"

"Swablu!" Skyler agreed.

“Next up – it’s Hugo Jones!” declared the announcer.

“Wish me luck, alby,” said Hugo backstage.

“Good luck!” said Karl.

“Yeah, do your best!” agreed Keiko.

Hugo walked towards the stage. He seemed reasonably confident, but
Karl wondered how nervous he was. This was his first contest too,
after all.

He released his Pachirisu, and a flurry of musical notes appeared from
the Poké Ball.

“What was that?” asked Karl. He ignored the scoffing sound he heard
from Martha’s direction.

“That’s the effect of seals,” said Keiko. “You can put them on your
Poké Balls, and they look flashy when you release your Pokémon.”

“Wow,” said Karl. He wondered whether Hugo had managed to find such
an impressive seal from his contacts at the Poké Mart.

On stage, Hugo’s Pachirisu was in the middle of Biding. The second
after unleashing energy, Hugo ordered a Quick Attack. Next came a
Charm attack, and to finish off, Pachirisu unleashed a fierece Spark.

“That was great,” said the announcer. “We’ve seen some great action
already here in the Jubilife contest. Let’s see what our judges
think.”

“A nice display of Pachirisu’s all-round abilities,” said Mr
Contesta. “A little unfocused, but a decent showing of what Pachirisu
can do.”

“A remarkable display!” said Mr Sukizo. “Remarkable.”

“It’s already a tough competition,” said Nurse Joy. “We’ll have to
wait and see whether that performance was good enough to qualify for
the second round.”

The audience applauded, and Hugo returned backstage, where Karl and
Keiko congratulated him on his performance.

“Not sure if it’ll be good enough to get me through,” said Hugo. “The
judges were a little negative.”

”You’ll be fine!” said Keiko. “You did your best, and it’s obvious
that Pachirisu did too.”

Karl was worried. If Hugo had been criticised for what looked like
such a good performance, how would he fare? The clock was ticking,
and his own performance was approaching.

"Looks like I'm up," Keiko said, snapping Karl out of his reverie.

"Break a leg," Karl said encouragingly, or as close to encouragingly as you
can get while coming down with stage fright.

Keiko darted out on stage as quickly as her evening gown would allow. As
she came to a stop, Skyler the Swablu disengaged from her head and glided
out to center stage.

"Skyler, use Mist!" Keiko commanded.

"Swablu!" Skyler confirmed. Hovering in mid-air, he raised his wings.
Soon, a thin cloud of fog began to fill the stage.

"Now use Aerial Ace!" Keiko ordered. "Just like we practiced!"

Skyler swooped up and then back down through the cloud, punching a hole in
it as the mist was pushed aside. Then he repeated the step again and again,
steadily chipping away at the cloud like a sculptor carving a statue with a
jet fighter. A form was rapidly taking shape, and that's when Skyler
noticed it. A chance glance out to the crowd revealed something that
disturbed him. Once he saw it, he couldn't get it out of his head. It was
just so wrong that he couldn't ignore it and had to do something before it
wrecked his performance.

In the front row, there were four people, out of six right near each other,
wearing hats but only two of them were sitting next to each other. This was
totally agititating his OCD. Don't they have ushers at these events? How
could they let something like this happen? Something had to be done. On
his next pass, he swooped low over the audience, picked up the hat and moved
it to the next person so that it alternated. Hat, no hat, hat, no hat, hat,
no hat, hat, no hat. Now that all was right with the world, Skyler went on
to finish his work.

"What an amazing job!" Marian declared just before the cloud-sculpture
began to disappate. "Keiko's Swablu used Mist and Aerial Ace to create a
cloud shaped like a Ninetales!"

"Clouds are a tough medium to work with," Mr. Contesta noted. "I think she
did a great job, although I feel as though she might have been trying a
little too hard."

"Remarkable!" Mr. Sukizo remarked.

"It's a little difficult to judge, since Miss Human did almost the same
thing," Nurse Joy said. "But you two were quite different in skill and
execution. Your Swablu moved so smooth and quick, that I almost didn't
notice it moving hats in the audience."

"Skyler, I thought we talked about this," Keiko admonished as the audience
laughed a little.

"Swab?" Skyler replied, looking quizzically at his coordinator.

Soon enough, Keiko and Skyler were backstage again. Back in the green room,
Keiko found Karl pacing anxiously.

"Nervous?" Keiko asked.

"What me?" Karl replied. "No, no, I'm not..."

"If you're nervous, just do what I'd do," Keiko offered.

Karl was almost afraid to ask. "What?"

"Pretend you're naked," Keiko explained simply.

"Don't you mean the audience?" Karl asked.

"No, 'cause ever since I left the island, I found people are generally
uncomfortable with nudists," Keiko clarified. "Being a nudist, I'd be
totally comfortable while everyone else awkwardly tried not to look at me."
She laughed a little. "I couldn't very well do it the other way around. I'm
used to naked people."

Karl paused for a moment. "How does this help me?"

"It's simple, alby," Hugo said. "The audience isn't focusing on you. It's
all about the Pokemon. All you got to do is tell it what to do, like in a
Pokemon battle."

((I just wanted to throw that in, since Karl was nervous and I don't know if
you thought about it that way or not.))
