"EXPLOIT 2G PSP Team V1.RAR" Is the one to avoid.

Apparently "destroys the PSP" but the article does not explain exactly what
it does. Maybe it attacks the firmware or something.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9614028/

Msn news say that it is a low level threat and only affects those whose
machines have "modified code".. whatever that may mean.

This may be the start of many. Taking bets now on how long till we see the
luanch of Norton PSP :-p

People who have downgraded to v1.5 firmware I think. The PSP is the
windose PC of handheld gaming...

Probably because it's just speculation and doesn't actually exist
except in the minds of journalists who can't think of anything better
to write about so they make up stuff, sorry but the media in my opinion
make too big a deal of viruses, I don't go online with my PSP anyway so
how the hell am I going to get a virus, with an infected UMD bought
from woolworths, I don't think so.

Get out of the wrong side of bed, eh? This thing does apparently exist,
but it's something you have to run yourself (which you would only
probably do if downgrading from firmware 2.0+) which then wipes the BIOS
or whatever. Allegedly.

The media don't make a bit enough deal of viruses and other
vulnerabilities in my view, certainly not to the extent where the news
actually reaches the people that need to hear about it (from a PC point
of view). If everyone took the same care as you do then there'd be less
of an issue, but they don't.

No doubt written by a Sony employee.

It certainly sounds like it's possible to do, but I think the only
people who would benefit from it would be Sony. However, Sony actually
*doing* that would probably be horribly illegal.

IMO, it's misinformation planted by Sony to make people think twice
about running homebrew or firmware downgraders.

That was the first thought that entered my head.

the downside of extensive media coverage would be that its giving
publicity to the tossers who write these virii, which is what theyre
after in the first place. a bit of notoriety, swell their tiny little
ego's and encourage them to do more.

i was more talking about coverage regarding prevention, rather than
coverage about the virii themselves. many people don't even buy
computer mags, and so have no idea why their PC has suddenly got
something wrong with it. there's hundreds of TV shows dedicated to how
to put up a shelf/how to boil an egg so why not one about how to
safeguard a PC?

Because it would get next to no viewers. Its the same with games coverage in
the market. Its seen as very niche fashion wise so no one bothers to put it
on the TV.
