Archived from groups: uk>games>video>playstation (more info?)

I recently purchased a PS3, after selling my 360.

The difference is amazing, the PS3 is worth the extra money, but when I
had a walk around town the other day I found 4 shops which sold such
items and all of them only had 360s in the display stands for people to
play on (although one of them in a Game store was flashing 3 red lights!)

Why no PS3s to try and tempt people?

Maybe I just feel more at home with the PS3 because of the whole
hardcore/in your face attitude of the 360

That's just the wrongest thing anyone's ever said.

> Why no PS3s to try and tempt people?

Because Sony never bothered to do a proper display pod for them. The
360 one is small, sits in a corner and has fixed pads. The PS3 one is
about 10ft wide, has a 42" screen with big display sections down the
sides and has no controller mounts, so shops don't actually let you
play on them in case people nick the controllers. Few places have them
because they're just too big to fit in a branch of Game. Zavvi in Leeds
have one, but you can't play on it.

HMV near me has a PS3 display and it is the same size as the 360 one. It is
also usable by the public.

Take a pic next time you're there, I'm curious. There are around 5 PS3
displays that I know of within 30 miles of me and they're all the size
of a small house.

There was speculation that the spinning DVD drive was partly responsible for

Anyway it's mostly been fixed for the last year if not fully now with the
new Jaspers.

As far as PSN vs. XBL well Live wins by a landslide. PSN is a slow feeble
service compared to live. Yeah Live costs a small amount but..you get what
you pay for.

With the PS3 watch out for failures after yet another firmware update. Just
go to the sonys own forums and see the compalints.

Toysaurus in Norwich has one in, with a controller on a chain. I tried to play
Motorstorm on it on Thursday, but it crashed to a green screen once I pressed
Start on the title screen.

Normally it has one of the PS2 dancemat games running on it.

I would count PS3's regular firmware updates as plus, not a minus.
Though recently they have had an unfortunate trend for piddling little
updates that don't do very much, they have brought in vast amounts of
new features this way. Check this out : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3_firmware#Details_of_updates

Now, there was that incident with the 2.40 firmware update bricking
some machines, which I guess you are referring to above, but hopefully
they have learnt their lesson from that!

4 red lights is a video cable problem.
3 red lights is a hardware failure of sorts.

I've had about times when the has shown three red lights, always after a
power flicker when playing, turning it off and on fixes it, no hardware
failure.

If they didn't take so bleedin long then it wouldn't be a problem, but
every time I switch on it takes 10 - 20 minutes because the download
speed is *so* slow from the PSN, if it was like the 360 game updates
where game updates have never ever IME taken more than 5 seconds then
it wouldn't be a problem, I don't use the PS3 much because every time
I switch it on I seem to have to wait 10-20 minutes for an update, by
the time it has finished I have gone back to the 360 or the PC!

but you have to say about a lot of the change - why the hell weren't
they there in the first place?
for instance:

>A scene-search feature similar to the version on the PSP has been added. This feature allows
>a video or PlayTV recordings to be broken up into 15, or 30-second;
>one, two, or five-minute intervals, which can then be accessed

it has taken then 2 years to realize that it would be nice to simply
and easily go to any part of the file?!?! (and even now the 360s
version is better, press left or right bumper to go forward or
backward 10% of the files length)

>The Internet Browser now supports Adobe Flash 9 content.
what use was a browser that didn't?
>You can now access the XMB screen while playing PlayStation 3 format software.
copying the 360?

and the number of times this crops up "The playback quality of some
PlayStation 3 format software has been improved." is more than a
little worrying, why was it poor in the first place? how can you
program for a system when the base units functionality is changing
every 5 minutes?

>
>Now, there was that incident with the 2.40 firmware update bricking

>they have learnt their lesson from that!

The PS3 is a good system but far too expensive and the 3 main good
points which differentiate it from the 360 are severely compromised,
the Blu-Ray films is far too expensive, Linux is crippled by not being
able to access much of the power of the PS3s hardware and the Internet
browser has been hamstrung by not having many of the most basic
add-ons like adobe flash until recently.
