Have been testing my new PC with FSX and Call of Duty 4. Everything maxed
out and still getting fabulous performance.

But then I thought, in 5 years time it's probably going to be classed as a
dog. Sometimes I think too much. Smile

cheers

September -Nehalem? Bloody impossible to keep up with it all. I think what
you did was a good idea, buy a good one now and let it do you for a good
while. I built mine a year ago, and it does everything I need it to do. FSX
with addons does run a bit slowish, so maybe I will get a more powerful CPU
once all that Nehalem stuff arrives, should drop the price of skt 775,
shouldn't it? Tomorrow hopefully, a solid state driive should be arriving,
so that'll be fun!

Nice system, to be sure. The new 45nm Intel Penryn chips have some
additional strengths including the ability to be overclocked and still
remain cool and stable. I built a similar system using the Q9450 chip on an
Asus Formula Rampage mobo. Same basic CPU specs except the Q9450 is 2.66GHz
at 1333MHz FSB. I have overclocked the FSB to 1600MHz which renders the
"stepped" CPU a 3.2GHz quad core. And, yes, it will run FSX with all
sliders maxed, although I do back off on a couple of settings such as AI
traffic (can't get a word in edgewise to ATC). I'm running a pair of 1Tb
drives (no RAID) and an overclocked nVidia 9800GTX card (715MHz core)
pushing a big 24" wide screen at 1920x1200 and a second CRT at 1024x768.
Smooth as glass........

Are you kidding? It was obsolete when it left Dell.

Not as fast as can be. My C2D a 3.4ghz will beat it in most games. I saw
fastest benchmark on 3DMark06 is using an overclocked 5.7GHZ Intel extreme
version quad core cpu. That's the fastest I have ever seen for a consumer
PC.

Don't let it get ya down, the thing is you have a kick butt system now,
doesn't matter if it will be outdated next year, or even next month,
undoubtedly you will get many many months of great enjoyment out of it!
The main thing is how it performs for you, and sounds like you are very
happy with it, congrats!

My C2D E6850 is running extremely well at 3.875Ghz on air cooling.
I'm very sceptical of the extreme overclockers benchmarks. Yes they
can get 5+Ghz on liquid nitro cooling but these systems are not
exactly fully functional. I would also imagine they turn down the
resolution and filters etc to generate the highest possible scores.

Not only that, but crank it up to extreme speed with extreme voltage, that
they would never run on any type of consistent basis, just to get a good 3d
mark score. They are not functional at all.
That just does not impress me, I have my Q9450 running rock solid at 3.40
ghz, day in and day out, at all times. I am extremely happy with it, and I
don't even have 3d Mark on my system, it means absolutely nothing to me.
I run Prime 95 to stress my system, to check for stability, and if it
performs satisfactorily in my programs, I am a happy camper.
It is amazing to me, the lengths some will go to, just to get some kind of
high score in 3d Mark.

It's a game, pure and simple. It's the same mentality as an auto race.
"How fast can I make this car go?" Not that there's anything wrong
with doing that, but to produce a benchmark for an article that
describes hardware's pros and cons is not very useful to most people.

But then the top speed of my car (145 mph) isn't very useful to me,
either. Anybody know where I can take it up to that fast?
