Post subject: OQFTCI Final Round 2: Geography
Archived from groups: rec>games>trivia (more info?)

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2003-04-07.
I will accept the answers that were correct then and there. If you
know that a question is out of date and a different answer is now
correct, please say so (either along with your answers, or in a
separate posting afterwards) and I will also accept that answer.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge.

See my September 22 companion posting "Old Questions from the
Canadian Inquisition (OQFTCI)" for further details. Since we are
now into the Final, each round generally has 15 questions in the
form of 5 triples on different subjects within a general subject.
I will be posting 8 rounds from the original game (omitting current
events and video), one at a time. As usual, your best 6 round scores
will count. I will reveal the correct answers in about 3 days.

I wrote two triples in this round.

Final, Round 2: Geography

* Canadian city nicknames

Name the city, given the nickname.

1. City of Champions.

2. City of Gardens.

3. Gateway to the West.

* The Interstate highway system

The Interstate highway system in the US is numbered systematically.
One of the rules is that 3-digit numbers are for branch or loop
highways in an urban area, while numbers with 1 or 2 digits are for
longer-distance routes. These questions are about highways with 1-
or 2-digit numbers, and the cities where they meet.

4. The city of Denver is served by three Interstate highways with
1- or 2-digit numbers; each of them either enters the city or
passes just outside it. Name any two of the three.

5. Same question for Atlanta.

6. Same question for Boston.

* Subways, Metros, Undergrounds, U-Bahns, and T-Banas

For each question in this triple, we have taken a recent map of a
city's subway system (whatever they call it) and removed not only all
the station labels and other text, but also all geographical clues
such as shorelines and rivers. In each case you must name the city.
Warning, these are diagrammatic maps and none of them is to scale.

7. <http://torquiz.freeshell.org/2003-1/questions/Final/map1.gif>.
Each of the little car symbols was beside a station name
before we erased the names. Name the city.

8. <http://torquiz.freeshell.org/2003-1/questions/Final/map2.gif>.
Note that this map has thick and thin lines; on some other
editions of it, the difference would have been more obvious.
The actual subway system is shown by the thin lines, while the
thick ones show a related service. Name the city.

9. <http://torquiz.freeshell.org/2003-1/questions/Final/map3.gif>.
Each of the little wheelchair symbols was beside a station name
before we erased the names. Name the city.

* Monasteries

These questions pertain to the handout at:
http://torquiz.freeshell.org/2003-1/questions/Final/monasterypix.pdf

10. Pictures #2 and #5 show different views of the same Italian
monastery, which was founded in 529, and subsequently destroyed
and rebuilt four times, most recently following a 1944 World
War II battle. Name the monastery.

11. The spectacular setting of the monastery in picture #1 should
be clue enough. It is situated just off the coast of which
country?

12. The monastery in pictures #3 and #4 is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, probably founded in the 7th or 8th century. The first
picture shows the monks' cells; the second shows their precipitous
location about 8 miles off the coast of County Kerry, Ireland.
It's named--at least partly--for the same celestial being as
the monastery in the previous question. Name it.

* So you think you're smarter than George W. Bush

Given the country, name the president.

13. Egypt.

14. Brazil.

15. South Africa.

I'd guess illegal immigration -- no one would annex it voluntarily.

BTW, I looked for you in Boston, but I guess you took Friday afternoon
off.

Paris certainly is a city where a related but distinct train service
complements the subway system, but I can think of several others
like that in Europe alone. Consider the S-Bahn systems in Berlin
and Munich, for example.

I don't think they are equally integrated with Metro like RER is, at least
not on the maps.

But, OK, there was one more thing. When I first opened the map, my broswer
scaled to show the entire map, which of course blurred details. Then I
noticed the thing about think and thin lines, and zoomed in to get full
scale. Then I saw something which was very familliar: the oval symbols
for connections between different lines.

None of them look like London, and I can't remember Paris 'cos I only used
