The receiver needs to be authorized before it will receive anything.
Considering it is a 920 it is probably used and therefore may have been
authorized.
http://www.motorola.com/broadband/4DTV/4DTVChannelUpdates_031205.htm has a list
of channels, analog and digital, that the 4DTV can receive. DCII-Clear
indicates free digital channels. The list is not perfect, but it is fairly
close to being current.

I guess I am still confused as to whether I have to subscribe to get
any of
the free channels or if I can just plug it in and find the free analog
an
free digital channels with out subscribing. |

Call NPS. Here is a link:
http://www.callnps.com/default.htm
I just called last week to renew my Guide. They will activate it for free.
This is my second year. I do not subscribe anything and get all the free
channels. |

In that situation what I would suggest is to plug it in and see what happens.
If you do not receive T5-600 the receiver needs to be authorized. It would be
the decision of the programming providers whether or not they would send an
authorization hit "gratis".
If you have an analog sub to any of the premium movie channels they will give
you a digital sub for those.

Somebody has to pay for the facilities to authorize you for free and uplink
those "free" channels!Get a subscription and support C band\4dtv or you will
one day be left with nothing, but an expensive boat anchor! It doesn't cost
that much for even a small package.

So that's why I don't get NETV? That sucks. Who are "they" to deny me
access to such channels that are available OTA (since I live in
Nebraska)??? I can get other digital channels so why am I being denied
this one for not having a subscription? Not to mention T5-601/602/603.
I'll do without since I will not pay to watch a bunch of freakin
commercials. |

One day...because you didn't support the c band\4dtv industry your 4dtv
receiver will be an expensive boat anchor, because you were too cheap to pay
for a programming package. The Premium movie channels don't have commercials!

NETV is not denying you anything.
This is just the way DigiCipher works.
Those channels are in FP status. To receive them the 4DTV must be authorized.
The programming providers may be willing to do it for free, but you need to ask
them if they will.
Authorization and having a subscription to programming are not the same thing.
You do not need an active sub to any programming, that is just one way to have
the receiver authorized. This could be something as simple as having the IPG
enabled. It also can be as simple as sending an authorization hit to the
receiver.
This is not a conspiracy that has been directed at you.

They aren't denying you anything. It's just the way the 4DTV works, it
needs an authorisations hit to pick up any DCII channels, regardless of
their authorisation status. |

I do plan to purchase some channels, I wanted to find out what is free
and what I will need
to subscribe to. I'm just curious now as I will be installing myself
and was curious if I will receive channels before I susbcribe. I will
deceide what channels I want and what I can receive after I get it
installed. My wife has to have HBO for Deadwood and the Soprano's or
the project would come to an immediate halt hehe. |

and the best way to get an authorization hit is to pay for a
subscription, because it helps keep the big dish and 4dtv alive and it helps
the people who are giving out authorization hits(personally,I think they
should stop giving out "free" authorization! If a person is too cheap to buy
a subscription, they shouldn't get to watch any "free"
programming!)....afterall,they have to pay their bills, too!
